Re: The Grob. Bring it back

One of my fondest memories was to witness an encounter between Joe French and Gordon Birch which commenced 1. f4 g5 and shortly thereafter a black rook appeared on h1, I also recall a Camberley - Sandhurst match in which Gordon Birch on board one for Camberley played 1.g4 versus Simon Williams ! :D

Are you thinking of the Shirov-Shabalov Gambit or perhaps the Keres Attack?

I'm intrigued to be aware of transpositions from The Grob into other, perhaps more mainstream, lines.

Re: The Grob. Bring it back

Camberley Chess Club has Prof. Gordon Birch who has played the Grob and the Borg since the 1970s.

I did cause him to fall off his chair when I played the Romford Gambit (Improved). :D

Membership download

Do we know at what point in time then downloadable ECF membership list will not include persons who membership expired on August 31st 2017 ? As far I know the ECF DoM does not frequent this place and I cannot be bothered with the "Ask the Director" rigmarole : once bitten twice shy. The background i...

I have complained to the ECF already but it has no effect.

May we see an example ?

Re: July Grades

It is great that the definitive grading list has arrived. Does anyone have a cunning plan to reduce late submission of games to the ECF grading team ? :) Yes, organise the tournaments / congresses / matches / games to be played earlier in the season. :D Geoff C. is bound to have a more pragmatic so...

It would appear that one of Daniel's aims was to beat an Independent Master who was more than 70 years old.

It is good to have attainable targets.

Probably someone who has left home and is no longer living with their parents.

Maybe they are self confident and have strong opinions ?

FIDE do not award such a title but it may be worth suggesting.

I managed to beat an Independent Master who was more than 70-years-old

A recent newspaper report about a player at Llandudno contained the following text :
I managed to beat an Independent Master who was more than 70-years-old
I found that slightly amusing. :D
