Re: Is Merseyside leaving the NCCU?

Suppose that clubs, leagues and congresses all existed, but county associations and county matches did not. Would anyone feel there was a pressing need to start them? From my totally uninterested perspective they seem like an awful lot of work for not a lot of return.

Me or any other clown can put that game in a book and get paid for it.
Worse still, you can even play the same moves in a game yourself. Indeed, you're actually encouraged to.

Afraid not.

On the other hand, there's a 50/50 chance it will be Everton playing at home, and the fixtures aren't announced till June, and finalised till July. Book early.

Re: Why you should learn to mate with bishop and knight

I thought maybe I should practice this against a computer. After three moves the computer resigned. Easy-peasy.

Re: Antics at a North London Club

It would probably take about a minute to identify the clubs that Mr Flatt has played away at recently. There's no anonymity here, and I doubt if it was ever intended.

"Moving on, we need to know very much more about participation by (a) ethnicity; (b) school background; (c) region; and (d) social class." OK, I'll bite. Why? Presumably so that we do not waste resources on a futile attempt to interest those who are never going to play, and concentrate on encouragi...

Re: Laws of Chess

Of course, if the arbiter has been distracted by events elsewhere and didn't see the incident, it's even harder (in my view, at least) to deal adequately with the response, "Yes, I touched the piece but only accidentally". If the player didn't have an immediate plausible answer to the question "Wha...

Re: Players getting stronger with age

I've just had a look at the 100 Top Players over 60 list on the ECF Grading Database. Running a finger down the Standard and Previous grade columns the average grade of these people has increased slightly. Average of the top 100 over 70 has also gone up, though not by as much.

Re: Experience using time increments for league matches

If you use adjudication it is NOT in the Laws of Chess, nor a permitted variant. So you are not playing chess. So when FIDE told the IOC there were 605 million chess-players in the world this actually excluded all those people who play a game similar to chess, but don't make sure their mobile phone...

Re: Experience using time increments for league matches

This is season three. We don't even bother suggesting it these days. Because nobody takes it up or because there’s no need to suggest it because other teams want it too (or at least you know which will and which won’t)? Because in season two there just seemed to be so much messing about to decide o...

Re: Experience using time increments for league matches

I did wonder whether bastions of adjudication and adjournment might not prefer 60 minutes with 30 second increments coupled with adjudication at 3 hours or 60 moves or extra time if adjourning. They might still have to play 60 moves in an evening which some might consider too fast. Is that very dif...

Re: Experience using time increments for league matches

This was introduced as a trial on Merseyside at my club's instigation. First division only, and if both clubs agreed - on all boards or none. A few clubs do not have digital clocks, but I'm not aware that any have a strict time limit on their premises. Half our matches were played with increments th...

Re: Laws of Chess

I assume Joshua that you think the only reasonable default language is English? How convenient. I would have thought the default language should be the one that, in cases where the two players have different first languages, the one that they are most likely to have some proficiency in. I very much...

Re: New Liverpool Chess Club website launched

I never realised you knew what we all did for a living. But you have a good point. Is it that in the olden days chess clubs were comprised mainly of people like that? Of a certain class and largely of a certain age. And then chess became a lot more inclusive, with a good spread of the whole (male) p...
