Why is it GM Barden (I say GM as you won British championship before)?
Barden does not have an international playing title, though his peak strength would certainly have got an IM title these days.

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Yes, Khademalsharieh, Sarasadat has finished in a tie for second/third. She was interviewed before the last round and didn't seem surprised to be doing so well. She had previously finished fourth but couldn't play last year because of the visa issue in Saudi. Her name is not infrequently shortened,...

Carlsen finishes the day half off the lead so all to play for on day 3.
Imagine how well he might do if he wasn't "tired and bored"......

As opposed to "well off" if you have heard that phrase.

Adjudications should be stamped on from the greatest possible height, I accept there can be adjournments in exceptional cases though.

Re: Milunka Lazarevic

It was Jana Hartston back then, and since she was then playing for England at the Olympiad perhaps she should count as such ;)

Milunka Lazarevic

One of the strongest non-Soviet women players in the post-war period.

Also quite a glamorous figure in her day, who reportedly "distracted" a former world champion amongst others.

Re: British Knock out December 2018

Whilst most R v B (and indeed R v N) endings are drawn, a sufficiently large minority are not to make playing on for a while perfectly legitimate IMO. Its not as if we are talking about K/R v K/R or something similar that is blatantly trivial.

Re: London Chess Classic

I was about to say that all the games in the main event have been drawn, but after three rounds of draws (6 games), today in round 4 MVL beat Aronian, and Caruana may be about to lose to Nakamura. But this is the tiebreaks, apparently. All the classical time control games drawn, I think. Yes, all f...

This position has happened quite often. One example with an English connection is Alfred Beni - John Littlewood Clare Benedict Cup 1963.
Of course the more common Knight underpromotion would win here as well as the Bishop.

Re: Under promotion to a bishop.

Tim Krabbe's site gives examples of "genuine" R and B underpromotions.

The latter in particular is indeed extremely rare, but as he shows not totally unknown.

Re: British Knock out December 2018

Just to clarify: this is not a British Championship. It is a tournament with a private sponsor who can't be prevented from calling his event a 'British Championship'.This fact has been clarified by Alex Holowczak, on my facebook wall. Had it been an actual British Championship, then qualification t...

Re: Lost chess clubs

Cumbria has a few that have gone under in the last 20 years - Whitehaven, Workington, Grange, Arnside and (my former club) Millom.

On a more positive note, Keswick have returned and the Ulverston club is almost booming.
