Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

The National Club Championships held at Telford last weekend were a shambles. The ECF has done little to promote the tournament and now, according to the budget for Home Chess, this historic competition has been abandoned completely. Shame, but after last week’s bedlam there’s little wonder.

Re: GDPR : What are the implications for LMS systems ?

The ECF's long anticipated guidance on GDPR is now available. https://www.englishchess.org.uk/data-protection/ To get their houses in order, action appears to be needed by club secretaries, team captains, league secretaries, website managers, congress organisers, and broadly anyone who collects name...

Re: Sport England is waste of money - claim

“It is like supposing you can inspire a new generation of guitar players by getting them to watch Jimi Hendrix,” Barrie Houlihan, professor of sport at Loughborough University, has said. This sort of thing happens. I remember two people inspired to take up drumming after watching Topper Heaton (was...

Re: GDPR : What are the implications for LMS systems ?

What is more my understanding is that under GDPR it is up to the ECF to ensure that it has the permissions by contacting those on its lists. Would you hazard a guess as to the proportion of persons that are listed on the ECF Master List (let us say 130,000 ?) for which the ECF has up-to-date email ...

Re: GDPR : What are the implications for LMS systems ?

However, John seems to me to be asking a serious question. There is a new EU Directive which may impact on League Management Systems such as his. Or it may not, if if won't come into force until after the UK has left the EU. John, I endorse Roger's suggestion. You should seek advice from the ECF. I...

The Simon Bartlett Memorial Congress takes place at the the Livermead House Hotel in Torquay over the weekend from Friday, 26 January 2018 to Sunday, 28 January 2018. Come and play, and in Simon’s memory bring along your loudest shirt, the one emitting the most decibels. The shirt thing should be a ...

On the 1st of every other month, one says: "Rabbits" or "Rabbits, Rabbits" by custom.
Except in Portland, Dorset, where saying "Rabbits" is a heinous act, Chas & Dave couldn't get a visa, and, weirdly, it doesn't go down well among the fisherman of the Western Islands.

Been looking at the games in the Open. Nice pairing Coleman Hawkins for those who collect pairings - for those who don't, he was a jazz saxophonist.
On Board 51 Nelson Van Delft was the owner of the Boston Celtics Basketball team, a minor character in a Harlan Coben crime thriller.

The more the merrier, but if you want to play in the tournament they'll need to book through the ACO.

For that matter football teams never seem to have a problem There was a PSG player refused entry to play in a Champions League match in London True. Last season Paris Saint-Germain’s Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier was denied a visa to play against Arsenal in a Champions League tie. If he had bee...

Re: ECF Agm 2017

The point being made was that a Welsh registered player, with English Silver membership, has to pay £1.50 rating fee for playing in an English FIDE rated event, while the English Silver member has to pay £10.50 to up-grade to Gold membership. Of course, a Welsh player wouldn't even need English Silv...

Re: 2017 AGM - Message to Bronze members

From the world of men. Sometimes I am wrong. But not often. Happy Days. Let’s block the strategy that aims to increase chess activity and encourage diversity; that plans for long-term financial security; states “our biggest asset is our membership”; and identifies the need to actively promote chess ...
