Re: Attitudes

I received the following email recently Please remove my details from your mailing lists. I was disappointed by the large number of juniors in your recent Easter event, and so will know to avoid e2e4 events in future. and interested to hear forum thoughts on the views expressed therein. Above all, ...

Re: Getting people to volunteer to do things

What is described is perfectly normal, and applies to every sort of club, not only chess. From personal experience, I would say that the best recruiting ground for organisers and administrators is new members. These are people who are already taking on a new, partly unknown commitment merely by join...

I'd prefer to see some proper academic research on this topic rather than random lists of players who happened to suffer a stroke or heart attack.

Re: little

I don't want to labour the point, but I would be interested in an example sentence where you thought that the 'up' at the front made a noticeable difference. Robert P.S. Perhaps it's the mathematician in me. The best mathematical statement or proof is the one which gives all of the required informa...

Re: little

It could be one of those unnecessary words that people sometimes include for no particular reason. My pet hate is starting a sentence with "up until . . . " I've never yet met such a sentence where the 'up' can't be omitted without changing the meaning. (I nearly put 'at all' at the end of the last...

Precisely because it is a forum, not a tournament hall.

I have no plans to change this software beyond the default sorry as I already have sufficient work to do :(
What exactly are you sad about?

Re: Gradings to be published, on the sidebar?

"Is this a quibble?" No - a fact. People need to be reminded of Richard Clarke's warning when he designed the grading system. I presume Carl could produce space for a profile as I believe occurs in some other forms of media, if he felt like it. I wouldn't blame him for refusing to do so! Isn't it b...

Quite. Especially since grades measure so little.

Re: Gradings to be published, on the sidebar?

Do I really need to try to read a string of 1300 players, in the hope that something sensible will turn up? No, just flick through it, wait until there is someone rated over 2000, or preferably even stronger, and look closely at 2200+ players. It is useful to cut out the junk. Colin, 1. Grades and ...

Re: Digital Clocks - issues arising from introduction

By the time we could afford some more the DGT2012 had been issued I can't find any mention of the DGT2012 on the DGT website. Does it exist as such, or is it a 2012 update of the DGT2010? Sorry! I meant to be talking about the DGT 2010 and its predecessor the DGT 2000. My point about models being s...

Re: Digital Clocks - issues arising from introduction

My own Club had the reasonable plan of buying a few digital clocks and then, when the funds became available, a few more. But beware! We started with the DGT2000 By the time we could afford some more the DGT2010 had been issued and the previous model was strictly unavailable. (I suppose that retaile...
