Re: 4NCL NORTHERN LEAGUE

I think the center of gravity of the 4NCL has been gradually heading towards London for the last few years, so I don't think it's so much the north wanting to do its own thing, as it is the 4NCL leaving a vacuum, which it's now trying to fill. Personally I'm not sure I really see the niche for this....

Re: County Success - The White Rose Flies High

Ben 9 of the Lancs U175 team play for clubs in the MCF and qualify to play chess for Greater Manchester 4 of the Open team do too Of course, if they want to play for Lancs, then G Man have no problem with that, we're in favour of players having choice The fact that G Man don't have an Open captain,...

Re: County Success - The White Rose Flies High

The second suggestion is that Lancs retreats its HQ base out of Manchester and over to Preston...(freeing up things for GMan). This would instantly rebalance these distortions in the north, and create a far more envigorating climate for chess in that area, liberating many other northern counties, a...

Re: Gibraltar and the lowest rated IM ever?

As I understand it Rybka (or any other chess program) isn't a monolithic entity that will always produce the same move in a given position. It would depend on the program version, hardware and cache state (i.e. has it seen the position before). Given the number of variables I would suspect (but can'...

Re: County Championships

Actually Carsten, the MCCU U175 is being held on 4th April as a one round jamboree, although this is the only way we could get any interest at all, and even then it's only over 12 boards. I think I am right in saying that only the SCCU plays an U175 qualifying competition. For the rest of the count...

Re: 2009/2010 4NCL Dates

From speaking to one or two 3C's players it appears that the southern weekends were a big factor. The problem was that their junior players were getting home later, i.e. 9 or 10 (and on one occasion about 1:00am) rather than 7 or 8 and parents weren't happy with that when they had to go to school on...

Re: Exchange, quality and PH Clarke's 100 Soviet Chess Minatures

George Walker's book "A New Treatise on Chess" from 1832 contains a definition of the exchange ( http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=cPXFJiXmSEAC&pg=PA6#PPA4,M1 ) that fits with current usage. That's the earliest I can definitely find, although Google suggests that The Popular Educator of 1767 also u...

Re: OLYMPIAD 2008 :):)

Personally I think that if you use game points then it's more of a contest to see who has the best 4 players rather than who has the best team. Both are reasonable goals, but for the first case you might as well just look at the rating list as that would be more accurate. I think there's something s...

Re: New grades (split from Editorial thread)

I don't really have the expertise to argue with the statistics, but I do wonder why I can't think of any examples if the effect is so major and widespread. I haven't been playing as long as some, but I still have 20 years experience and those players I can think of whose grade has dropped all have s...

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?

I think that Stewart was right earlier on when he said something like I may not be able to define bringing the game into disrepute but I know it when I see it For me this is the heart of the problem. Yes, you know it when you see it, I know it when I see it and Stewart knows it when he sees it but ...

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?

In a recent international tournament the game started 1 b3 f6 2 Bb2 Kf7. Black was much higher rated and of course won the game. White withdrew from the tournament and I am ot sure he has played since. Not the best of examples as this actually looks quite a reasonable approach for Black. I also see...

Re: Resignation Rumours

As a director of fairly major consumer brands I have always believed in giving customers value for money. That means selling them something at a price below that which they are prepared to pay. The only thing that I can see that the ECF can sell to its customers (aka the players) is their grade. Wh...

Re: ELO vs ECF

I agree that the Elo system is better than the ECF one, but as far as I can see there isn't that much difference. For me the fundamental problem is that you're taking a small number of games played under all sorts of conditions, with widely varying time controls, involving isolated groups and trying...
