Re: Tactics practice

One from 2012. I'm White and it's my move. What should be the outcome with best play?

Re: ECF Game Fee Billing

In this case the two players notified me of their Silver+ status in the week before the tournament started. It looks as though the ECF system didn't pick this up in time, so regarded them as in a lower membership category on the date the event started and (incorrectly) charged us for them. Probably ...

Re: ECF Game Fee Billing

Our experience at Pimlico Chess Club is that the billing system is working, but not perfectly. In the past month we have been invoiced for two events: (1) the 3rd Pimlico Summer Chess Tournament (2013 – a Silver event) (2) the Central London League (2012/13 - a Bronze event). In relation to (1), ...

Re: ECF Game Fee Billing

In relation to (2), we were invoiced £20 for 10 games by non-ECF members. This was correct. Was this itemised by individual, club or both? The invoice showed the player name, club, ECF code, and number of results. I should add that the invoice details were exactly what our internal systems had led...

It's OK, he's just started Secrets of Kingless Endings by John Nunn so he won't be needing this one.

Re: Does your play improve with alcohol consumption?

A cautionary tale. I played in a match against Drunken Knights at their premises a few years ago. My opponent was late, so I started drinking before he did. At the time I made the fatal error that lost the game, I had consumed 3 pints of beer to his 2 pints. Of course, other factors such as alcohol ...

Re: Best digital clock

I would also vote for the DGT 2010. It is expensive, but any club making a bulk order should be able to negotiate a discount. The current version of the DGT 2010 will display the number of moves (as in button or lever presses). You just press the + button while the clock is running. As far as I know...

Re: 2013 British Chess Championships (Torquay)

Instead of …Kf5, I wonder whether Arkell considered …Kg5, letting the e6 pawn go with check in order to play …Kg4 and …h4 swapping off the g-pawn, then sacrificing the knight on e5 to eliminate White's two centre pawns, then sacrificing the bishop on a3 to reach a drawn KNN v KP ending. If K...

Re: Civil Service - ECF Agreement

The CSSC are presenting this as a rebate that they've negotiated with the ECF. It's hard to see what the ECF get out of this, and I assume the CSSC are bearing the full cost. (I'm sure someone will correct me if that's not the case.) If so, the CSSC are effectively offering a £10 discount on their ...

Re: 3rd Pimlico Chess Tournament

The draw for Round 2 is online at http://pcc1.net/3psct-r2.html . Two of the top three players in the Open are taking a bye this week. The tournament has reached its maximum capacity of 60 entrants (and I have had to turn latecomers away). Good to see a non-professional weekday evening chess event a...

Re: Central London League

Pimlico Chess Club uses the venue on Thursday nights. I could find out whether it was available on other nights, but given the rental charge (£80 a night) it would be uneconomic to open on a second evening on a regular basis unless there was sufficient chess activity from other teams to recover the...

Re: Central London League

I should have added that we will also run a 3rd division (grade 120 or below) if there is sufficient interest.
