Re: Central London League

James - You forgot to mention that there was a prize last season of £200 for the winner of the Grand Prix which is detailed on the league website. Hopefully this will continue next season. If so will it cover the new division(s) or will there be a separate prize for each division. And another thin...

Re: 3rd Pimlico Chess Tournament

The experience of round 1 is that a ratio of one organiser to 50 players is not a sensible ratio and I intend to bring reinforcements next time.

Re: 3rd Pimlico Chess Tournament

Round 1 results are online at http://pcc1.net/3psct-r1.html . This passed off peacefully enough with only one dispute (not clock-related) which was amicably resolved outside. 80 10 seems to be a fast time limit. All games finished inside three hours except one long game which went to 3 hours 10mins.

Re: 3rd Pimlico Chess Tournament

Yes he's had a dip in form recently and wants to recover his confidence by playing at a lower level.

Re: 3rd Pimlico Chess Tournament

The final score may remain even if one of the teams scores twice or nobody scores. Equally Bayern could have won 3-1 in normal time - they had plenty of chances. My aim was to randomise the colours so that I couldn't be accused of bias as I would not know in advance how many goals would be scored in...

Central London League

The Central London League has completed its second season. Congratulations to the winners, Pimlico Rangers (an Athenaeum–Kings Head consortium), and to their captain, Jim Stevenson. The purpose of this post is to publicise the league and invite team entries for next season. In the Central London L...

Re: Adjudication: another league moves on

Relatively peaceful. A general acceptance that the time had come to move on, with some concern to help older players through the transition to avoid them walking away. I think we may lose a few. On the other hand, the league becomes more attractive to outsiders if it opens up.

Re: Adjudication: another league moves on

Somebody has K, R, B v K, R or similarly K, R. N. The increment is 10 seconds so the players are no longer keeping score. The arbiter should step in when it is clear to him that 50 moves have been made without a capture or pawn move, or that the position has occurred 3 times. I might let it go more...

Re: London League divisions

Thanks, very interesting. My strongest memories are towards the end of the period, when Kings Head were dominant. Streatham were comprehensively thumped by Kings Head in 1990, although I was fortunate enough to swindle RMcM. I don't recall Wood Green at all from those days. It must have been before ...

Re: London League divisions

I played for Streatham in the London League Division 1 from 1985 to 1990. This was before Wood Green and Drunken Knights came along. I don't have tables from that time but I recall Kings Head and Cavendish being very strong (probably the two strongest teams). There weren't so many titled players, bu...

Re: Adjudication: another league moves on

A 105 move game only lasts 15 minutes longer than normal, 150 moves is an extra 1/2 hour. That's one of the basic problems. If you start between 7.30 and 7.45 and have to be out at 11.00, a extra half hour isn't available. It's also down to the technology. If you could easily see the move counter o...

Re: Adjudication: another league moves on

Where the game finishes on the night, the time control will be incremental (G80 +10s) wherever suitable digital clocks are available. Did you feel the need to have a rule to prevent infinite games, bearing in mind that without keeping score, there's no obvious way to enforce the fifty move rule? We...

Adjudication: another league moves on

One of the few remaining adjudication leagues, the Civil Service League, has voted to make finishing on the night the default option. Adjudication will still be available but only if both players agree. This is expected to be a transitional arrangement on the way to an eventual mandatory finish on t...
