Re: Dr Who on Saturday

the Fourth Doctor takes on K9. He has (at least) an 11x9 chessboard then? Oh come on he's a Time Lord. Of course he's got an 11x9 chessboard. Also captured pieces can travel in time and space, so they can reappear either earlier or later in the game and on different squares. Subject to the F...

Re: Dr Who on Saturday

It's an interesting position. Unfortunately the lead-up lacks credibility. The cyber-opponent announces a win for Black, shortly before the Doctor finds the queen sacrifice. One can understand a human opponent missing the sacrifice, but the cyber force is robotic and can presumably calculate 2 billi...

Re: Why no fixtures?

As a large number of London League captains will now know, the executive committee meeting is scheduled for 13 June and the AGM is provisionally scheduled for 10 July. So thanks to Brian Smith for the advance notice. I asked Brian when he thought next season's fixtures would be published. He said th...

Re: 3rd Pimlico Chess Tournament

Kevin has been around for longer than me, so I defer to his recollection of the previous EC discussion. If the matter came up now, the EC would debate the policy and might want to make a recommendation to the AGM to clarify the point. The London Commercial League model is one option. Personally I wo...

Re: 3rd Pimlico Chess Tournament

These are the eligibility criteria for the London Commercial League: 2. Membership of the League shall be open to Clubs attached to and representing a Commercial, Public Utility, an Educational Establishment or Public Service organisation within the Metropolitan Area, and to individual persons, who ...

Re: 3rd Pimlico Chess Tournament

I've been playing for Pimlico this season in the Central London Chess League. I haven't played for them in the Civil Service League because I didn't think I was eligible, not having been a club member for the required 2 years. From what you're saying, it seems that I could have played by dint of ha...

Re: KBN versus K

I had the KBN a few years ago and failed to deliver mate within 50 moves. I was short of time, but that's not an excuse – I learned the technique a long time ago (in one of Averbakh's books I think) but I hardly ever revised or practised it. That led me to look up the technique in a few endgame bo...

Re: Rule 10.2 (a) AGAIN then

I am the organiser and I am not aware of a single 10.2 claim. Sometimes players do have to live on the increment but they just get on with it and the game reaches a natural conclusion. Could you remind us of your rules? If increments are compulsory, you won't get a 10.2 claim because they aren't al...

Re: Rule 10.2 (a) AGAIN then

The Central London League has almost finished its second season. There have been about 250 games since we started. I am the organiser and I am not aware of a single 10.2 claim. Sometimes players do have to live on the increment but they just get on with it and the game reaches a natural conclusion. ...

Re: Which chess software?

For the best openings book, you need the biggest database, which means ChessBase and its associated products. However, you can keep up with opening theory on Chesspublishing.com (although you need an annual subscription to get the most out of it). For blitz practice, it's much more realistic and enj...

Re: Why no fixtures?

James, A revised list has been issued by the Fixtures Coordinator (not myself) and is being checked by other members of the committee whilst we post. Once agreed as being correct I will then upload it. There are various other changes I need to laboriously make including the divisional structure etc...

Re: Why no fixtures?

John There seems to be a problem with some of the Border League fixtures. Division 3 has six teams and you would expect them to play each other twice for a total of 10 matches. But the future fixtures list for each team shows only six fixtures. For example, Godalming A play home and away against Cro...

Re: Why no fixtures?

That's excellent news. It took only 10 days since the Surrey Border League AGM to prepare the fixtures. That shows what can be done.

Latest on the London League fixtures is that they might be ready on 31 August (two days' time). Here's hoping.

I am poised to receive and import the fixtures!
John

Going by the time of your last post, you have now been poised for over 18 hours. I hope this is not too uncomfortable.

Would it be possible for you to obtain a progress report from your source?

Re: Why no fixtures?

As captain of one of the teams in the London League I really think we should just be thankful of all the work that Brian and others do. With various different venues and with many clubs having several teams, organising the fixtures cannot be an easy task and we should be grateful that someone is pr...
