If you think women have more rights than men you have more to worry about than preferential treatment designed to attract more women to chess.

Sounds are also an important aspect.
An opponent of mine was quite perplexed as I groaned my way to a victory, ie playing good moves (for my level!
) and then looking disgusted as if I'm totally lost.

I play bullet games online, you don't have to put any effort in and they are over very quickly. I don't think they do much for my chess but they can be amusing. The last time I entered the East Devon in 2009 there had been rumours of its forthcoming demise due to lack of entries.

I have a game knocking around the internet somewhere in which my opponent promoted a pawn, about move 16 and was promptly mated the next move.

It might be helpful if you defined "politics" and how much you consider to be too much.
I feel that the little politics that goes on in my club (that I'm aware of) is just about enough to confirm that the members are indeed humans.
