Re: International Round Up 1/11/11

Recently active GM Matthew Sadler will be taking part in next years Wijk aan zee tournament, where he will be playing in group C. Judging by recent form this could get pretty scary for his opponents as his grading would seem to put him in Group B at the very least. http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetai...

Re: Appeal for Board Support

I have

Beast Sensation
Asbestos Innate
Abstinent Oases
Botanies Sanest

I think Beast Sensation is the winner here.

Re: My first good result in league chess :D

My first league game for Hammersmith ended in a draw. Amazing; I've beaten my record from last season in Coventry already :D. I thought I'd share this here, as people have helped in my improvement (at least, I hope I've improved, heh). I had White: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5 5.Ng3 Bg6 6....

Re: Recovering from a bad run of form

Dear Thomas, Please ignore M Stone's appallingly bad taste in his manner of responding in a thread originated by a schoolboy. You may not have noticed. You are already a stronger chessplayer than most of the other ECF Arbiters. Our strongest is Ray Keene. Other GMs include Yuri Averbach (Rusia) and...

Re: Recovering from a bad run of form

My method. 1. Announce retirement from chess. or 2. Find someone much lower graded than you and beat them. Repeat as many times as necessary until confidence is back. Admittedly, there is a chance in scenario 2 that you will lose, in which case you should probably retire. Please Note: Not an entirel...

Re: How good do players really want to become?

Meh, better than I am at the moment.

I wouldn't want to become a titled player (NM or above), but that is not going to happen so I needn't worry about it.

If I were to put a number to my goal it would be 160.

I'd also like to stop playing like a total idiot at congresses.

Re: Complicate or simplify against a weaker player?

If you're 15-20ECF pts above them don't worry about complicating or simplifying the position.

You're supposed to better than them, prove it! Play better chess.

Play the chess that got you your rating in the first place.

Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

I agree. Anyone who buys the Times would naturally think that he is one of the main men, and a lot of well connected people buy the Times. I was chatting to a judge who sits in the Court of Appeal last year and when I mentioned that I was a competitive chess player, he asked "oh, have you played th...

Re: Changes to the format of the British Championship?

Oh come on, no player below 140 is ever gonna qualify ;) surely someone agrees with me that to give hope to every level of player is good for chess. Even if not the grand prix idea then a tournament contaning 200 odd u120 players play 11 rounds to decide 2 or 3 places at the British. Such a great s...

Re: Commission for the Modernisation of FIDE

It's typical of morons. You do something that everyone knows will be a complete mess. Create a candidates tournament for the classical world championship where the format means games can be decided in blitz games. Then when this leads to problems, instead of realising how stupid you are blame someth...

Why????????
To protect the grading of those who don't like playing underrated players.

Of course.

Re: CJ Banned?

I agree with Liam it is ashame that a T- shirt overshadowed such a fantastic British Chess Championships. I think the critical point is that it was probably the wording on the T- shirt which people found offensive rather than what it said as it were. I think people are entitled to wear what they wa...

Re: CJ Banned?

I'm sure christians acknowledge that homosexuality exists... Generally the bible is considered to be against homosexuality. There is, of course, debate on this issue. Generally christians who don't agree with homosexuality use the bible as support, and so do those who accept it. With tongue firmly ...
