Re: CJ Banned?

Out of curiosity how did CJ get elected as ECF president; And why did the previous ECF president stand down. I think Boris must of felt obligued to hold that sign, I mean christians don't believe in homosexuality do they, and it's not condemned in the bible from my knowledge. I must stress though I...

Re: CJ Banned?

Meh, I can see one objection that trumps the "think of the children" defense. The prizegiving is about chess. Not about any messages that the prize giver wants to give out, whether they be in support of homosexuality, the English defense league or freeing Tibet. On the other hand perhaps we can set ...

Re: 2010/ 11 grades

Cheers Carl. :P

I seem to be missing a game, which has taken me from my predicated rating of 144 to 147. I'm not sure whether to be happy or complain.

Re: Most Annoying Behaviour?

Having the same surname as me, but having a higher grading.

That's pretty annoying. :|

Re: 2010-2011 Grades?

Where the grader has no way of telling when the club championships were played as all he has are the results. The radical solution to this problem is to tell the grader when the game was played, as well as the result. It's a good thing the ECF is so good at giving out information, after all if they...

Re: 2010-2011 Grades?

Or would they in that scenario attempt to ascertain which were the last five games played in the previous season and use those to make the calculation? I assume the latter method would be extremely difficult to implement (and the former method seems incredibly sensible anyway!) Every event is (or s...

Re: Do you believe in God

If you pray while you play, is that cheating? I guess if it were, your prayers would necessarily go unanswered. Hence those who believe in God don't pray during play, leaving the rest of us to seek divine intervention. :) I've always wondered about this. Surely, it doesn't apply just to chess. Shou...

Re: 2010-2011 Grades?

This has been scrapped. All players' results will be published online, a la Yorkshire and FIDE, when the rating list is published online in July. This is in addition to the check e-mails that appear to be being sent out as we speak. Only members get those check e-mails, though. Carl will be able to...

Re: Subscription concessions?

I am big enough and ugly enough to look after myself especially where cowards who hide behind a keyboard are concerned. Face to face I doubt they have much fortitude! Seriously, this is a chess forum to discuss chess, well and other stuff. Now if you want to play keyboard warrior there are plenty o...

er, having done that out of curiosity, it is not a search I would recommend to those of a sensitive disposition. It appears Sebastian shares his name with an actor of an, erm, non-classical repetoire.

Re: Subscription concessions?

Sebastian said, As far as I'm aware one of the goals of the ECF is (or should be) to get people to play chess, not sneer at them. I don't sneer at chess players, I support chess financially and with effort through playing and helping out. I have however very little time for the feckless scroungers,...

Re: Subscription concessions?

I doubt theres one single chess player anywhere in the UK who cannot find what in many cases amounts to less than a £1 a week over a year to pay club fees. You obviously don't have much imagination, then, do you? If someone was on Unemployment Benefit, for instance, they might seriously struggle t...

Re: Subscription concessions?

When compared to other social activities, is chess really an expensive activity or have chess players just been used to having good value for money for pursuing their chosen hobby ? I picked a few sports clubs (totally at random) and have listed their membership/game fees... Exeter snooker club : Â...

Re: Local leagues and young adult particpation

No idea, our club didn't have a team in the top division last season.

However, as it is in East Devon I would hazard a guess at not many.
