Re: The 40 point Rule

(1) You mean an extra fee on top of the extra fee I already pay for not being a direct member? (2) That is way above my level of skill I'm afraid. (3) So you intend for clubs like Sidmouth to have the vast majority of their players have graded games for free (the internal club championship) a...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'

Undoubtedly the winners will be those who play more chess.

As someone who plays about 25-30 games a year (26 last year, 30 so far this year) I don't know whether I will be a winner or loser, I don't care either.

Re: The 40 point Rule

We haven't even begun looking at the way we might implement membership, and Council only voted to investigate this option. So make your own mind up when the time comes, but ignore doom-mongers. One possibility (pay-to-play, which is what some other countries do) is that these excellent tournaments ...

Re: The 40 point Rule

Yes. This means there's a good chance that after September 2012 I'll never play rated chess again. In the interests of market research, are you prepared to say why? I don't think it's exclusively financial given the number of games you played in 2009-10. Since the only service the ECF provides to m...

Re: The 40 point Rule

should I have both the desire for such a title and be a member of the ECF, neither of which will happen Were you aware that the ECF Council has just voted that you have to become a member (at a cost of £18) from September 2012? Yes. This means there's a good chance that after September 2012 I'll n...

Re: The 40 point Rule

Isn't somebody performing over 10 points above their current grade always affected by the 40 point rule, as I have pointed out. It is not a major problem as it used to be due to the recalculation of ECF grades, but is a problem which I think we are stuck with unless the grading system is totally co...

Re: Chris Majer returns!

I wonder how many chess players track their performance through the season this way. :| Probably not many. I should spend less time doing that (I only started a few years ago) and more time putting my games in a database so I can analyse them and improve (I used to enter games the same day as playi...

Re: Chris Majer returns!

As an example, I put the cut-off date after Hastings, and recalculated from there, and there was little change You aren't going to prove that much, unless you have your opponent's recalculated grades as well. So if you played someone at Hastings who was 140 in the actual "as at" 31st May list and w...

Re: A possible improvement to grading?

Then you should be ashamed of yourself. You did not win the points, you obtained them via a mathmatical formula invented by some nut who hated chess and wanted to kill off the game. Contact your grader and get him to remove the paltry few points you gained. Give them to charity. Err...If I took awa...

Hey! Some of my best games are bland draws against higher rated players.

Re: A possible improvement to grading?

I have read that a study of many grandmaster games showed about 40% were wins for white, 30% draws, and 30% wins for black. If this is correct, then it shows that white's advantage of the first move is not just inital but potentially lasting. That being so, should it not be reflected in grading? Sh...
