Re: Hastings Congress

It would be a shame to lose the Hastings Congress as it is such a huge part of English chess heritage, but £25,000 is a LOT of money, more then most businesses can afford to spare these days. I would personally have a crack at getting a big bookmaker to sponsor it - the are a few of them that take b...

Re: New National Blitz event

Well I know it doesnt work in the schools megafinals - you will see the same players travelling all over the country to play in those thanks to some sort of dubious eligibility rules. If you can only enter one event then fair enough, hold them on different weeks, but if not then everyone should have...

Re: Quit Stallin'

They are not all that hard, and that is the point of them - it is about pattern recognition rather then the "satisfaction" of solving some utterly absurd composed position that takes hours to find a king shuffle. That is what makes it a great book, I defy anybody to fully complete it and NOT see the...

Re: Quit Stallin'

I definitely feel I am right in my assertion that a lot of books will not help a player improve: how many times have you read a book that leads you into a vaguely interesting position and then dumps you off saying it is +- to white, as if that is going to help you find any sort of objective plan, al...

Go on youtube - plenty of "masters" willingly dispense free knowledge there

Re: Piece values

I was listening to the perpetual podcast with Matthew Sadler and Natasha Regan as guests which included a discussion about Alpha Zero. It was interesting to hear that AZ wasnt programmed with a numerical value for the pieces, raising the question as to whether or how that affected the way it played...

Re: New National Blitz event

I liked the format of this years event happening on one day (even if it were, probably, a herculean effort of logistics to accomplish) - it meant a lot of players made it through to the finals that would have not otherwise had the opportunity. With a "choice" of dates you would have ever increasing ...

Re: Quit Stallin'

I'm guessing the stalls must still make a bit of money - there are many players who still love them and collect avidly. Even I have a pile of books I bought in the past collecting dust on shelves somewhere, not that I ever really got anything much from them, most of the time I'm lucky if the opening...

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

I know this is a bit of an old topic now but I just had an idea that is the best of both worlds - why not do monthly grades for under 18s and leave the rest to be 6 monthly, then we could also do away with the guesstimate ratings for juniors and be able to use whatever their current rating for calcu...

Re: Harassment and Toxic Behavior on Chess.com

There seem to be tons of things you see in online chess that would never happen over the board, these are a few of the most common: 1. DEMANDING an opponent resigns a losing position immediately, presumably so the time doesn't get too short and it becomes hard for them to continue using their engine...

I don't see how CJ can be short of cash- there are pub quizzes pretty much every night of the week and he would be a one man army in all but the most elite events

Re: What if a player falls ill....

I would like to think I would be reasonably sporting with my decision if an opponent was suddenly and unexpectedly taken ill at the board (though if they dropped dead, if it not like they really need those rating points anymore....) What bothers me more is when people knowingly turn up with massive ...

Re: 300 ECF Grade

I was looking at the top players list on the ECF grading list and noticed that Ian Nepomniatchi has an ECF grade of 299. Has anybody ever surpassed 300 ECF grade? If I had 5 years, 30 novice opponents, and traded away all respect as a chess player I'm pretty confident I could get a 300 rating....

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

I totally agree with chess being far too 'top heavy' in its monetisation - people might draw the parallel with football and the millions their top guys make, but three big difference there is that the guys in lower leagues are still recieving very respectable salaries (in almost all leagues football...

Re: British Rapidplay Entry Requirements

Only one 190+ at that grading boundary surprises me - I would have expected multiple 200+ players in the 1900 range these days when you consider how broken the fide ratings are now. Would have been better to just not use fide rapid at all (aside from rating calculation) and base it entirely on the m...
