Re: An early Tony Miles game

Why were there so many English players of that era who went by their initials instead of their actual name - was that a convention of the times?

Re: Who may J'adoube ?

Attend enough rapidplay events and you will see this happen for real, usually during time scrambles, and always with the piece ending up on the preferable square. Not sure what would happen now that the "illegal move" rule is in place - the offended player would be in his rights to claim a win, but ...

Re: A dubious but spectacular Knight sorte

No, do post more games, I would infinitely prefer to see chess games than some of the tripe that can get on this forum when we are just discussing chess. Best solution to not clogging it up with too many separate posts might be to just have one called Alan Llewellyns chess games, and use that whenev...

Re: The Grob. Bring it back

The sort of transpositions I am thinking of are ones where white is given time to get in e4 or d4 and relatively passive play by black running into one of those kingside pawn rush attacks like you see against the dragon, pirc, or even semi slav. Needs black to be relatively cooperative in not seekin...

Re: The Grob. Bring it back

There is no reason for anybody not to play the grob still, sure you are unlikely to convince the likes of magnus carlsen to take it up for the amusement of the chess playing public, but that does not mean it is an unplayable opening which can often reach main line theory by transposition.

In my experience, black invariably plays the 5... Bg4 6. h3 h5!? lines against 0-0 - you almost never see anything else.

Re: Does anyone play the Spanish opening exchange various 4. Bxc6?

I am an advocate of the exchange as white, but you do have to be prepared to sometimes draw or if you do win it will be in a relatively uninteresting endgame. Not that there are not hundreds of white openings which use the same method, but the exchange lopez seems to get especially picked on for som...

Re: British Chess Championship Daily Reports

I missed the playoffs and the website only shows the final game of Jones vs mcshane now - I presume Howell and Hanley got a crack at the playoffs too?

Re: Generational Best Players Never To Win British Championship

I guess there are ancient masters from the early 20th century who never won it either, though the names elude me right now. Looking through the list, it seems as though the title has been distributed relatively fairly among our top players, though I was surprised to see Brian Eley won it - I thought...

You must be spoiled for choice in to pick from the round 3 games, Andrew, with all the scalps claimed it was not a good day for the titled players.

I think we should all play a few games to celebrate - I'll be on chesscube playing 3 minute tournaments, if anybody wants a piece of the action.

Re: Decline of Evening Chess 17/18?

I imagine it could be for lots of reasons: -adjournments: as few people these days want the extra time and expense of playing multiple sessions, and that is before we even start talking about engine influences. -room hire cost: probably an especially major factor in london where space is at a premiu...

Re: Bridge not a Sport

Oh, maybe bridge not as civilised as I imagined. Mind you, most non chess players are often shocked at some of the stories I tell them of controversies in the game, so I guess it should not be so surprising.

Does anybody have any especially amusing stories of anger during games of bridge to share?

Re: Bridge not a Sport

Bridge seems like a much more chilled out passtime too, you never hear the same stories of anger and pettiness from bridge players as you do from chess.

He even got a "bonus" 20 odd moves to try and pull that mate off, and I presume would have carried on even longer had the game ended in stalemate. You would have thought that if the game was being live streamed somebody would have noticed that it had gone past 50 moves
