Make a fortune selling things to chess players? Thats a good one, gave me a proper laugh.

Clock Damage Solution

I was at a match some weeks ago when we noticed just how out of line the old clocks can become - the match started at the same time, two games ended in a massive time scramble blitz finish, yet one game ended 10 minutes before the other (obviously one was running considerably faster then the other)....

Re: The Death Of Chess Engines

As time consuming as it may seem to a human, fast computers would have no such qualms about analysing millions upon millions of positions, the only thing we are really waiting for is for the processing speed to allow this to be possible. I am sure there were many who scoffed when computers first sta...

The Death Of Chess Engines

I was looking through some other chess forums recently (yes, such heresy, I know..) and found the subject of engines "solving" chess to be a recurring theme. It made me wonder if they did reach a stage where it was possible to analyse the entire game to completion, would any further research into th...

Re: Grading and Time Limits

I played a recent London League game and won at the end of an adjournment. I have never known that getting a sealed move envelope out would be enough to force resignation. I have certainly given draws away in the past when the adjournment time comes knocking, as I have no intention of forking out t...

Re: The Mystery Of The Missing Bognor Regis Knights' Heads

Even to this very day the atrocities continue. Go to any long established club and you will find yourself stacks of mutilated kings, their crowns twisted form their heads. Not sure why this happens, I can only theorise that some players are so poor that they are taking them down to pawnbroker shops ...

Re: Is chess a waste of time?

I suppose this begs the question as to what is NOT a waste of time? When you reduce our lives to the most basic needs, we are only required to take sufficient water and nutrients and evade death for as long as possible. All other activities are completely up to the individual to choose as they deem ...

Re: National Chess Library closure

Here is a novel (and much cheapter idea). Pay some impoverished chess player a few hundred quid to scan every page of every book and create an online archive which could then be accessed by anybody through the ECF website (or if somebody REALLY clever was able to help, it could even be marketed as s...

Re: Division Four South 2016-17

As complex as it was it actually looked a pretty usual kings indian game to me - white achieves an objectively winning position on the queenside, black flails around wildly trying to land a cheapo mate on the kingside before the material situation becomes untenable. Offering the f2 bishop as a sacri...

Re: Tips for coaching children

I suppose the underlying difficulty many coaches forget is that chess is essentially just a game which many players treat as a bit of fun, pushing the pieces around without wanting to attempt to master its complexities. There will be a few younger players who have a strong drive to keep going forwar...

Re: Rooms for final weekend

This hotel nonsense has made me give up 4ncl for good.
It is a shame for this to keep happening, as it is probably not the fault of the organisers, but still I doubt there are many other national league events where the players get treated in such a shabby fashion.

3) Pool B proved beyond doubt it was far stronger than Pool A. Of eight matches between the two Pools in Round 8, the team from Pool B won in seven of them. In fact, in the promotion Pool, the 'worst' of Pool B convincingly beat the 'best' of Pool A when Warwickshire Select 1 defeated West Is Best ...

Re: Does Michael Adams Have an Immortal Game?

He had a pretty good game against Topalov recently, but I think his style of play tends not to lead to the sort of weird hack attacks that make 'immortal' games - I imagine most of the very sharp positions he does play into have been calculated to get an advantage (or his opponent inflicts them on h...

Re: Problem with digital clock

Indeed. I witnessed such an unfortunate/amusing incident last night. White was queen for knight up, but black had a pawn on the seventh. With both players apparently having less than 5 minutes left, they started blitzing - in desperation W gave up Q for [edit]P, leaving him with K+3 v K+N. White ma...
