Re: British Chess Championship Daily Reports

I missed the playoffs and the website only shows the final game of Jones vs mcshane now - I presume Howell and Hanley got a crack at the playoffs too?

Re: Generational Best Players Never To Win British Championship

I guess there are ancient masters from the early 20th century who never won it either, though the names elude me right now. Looking through the list, it seems as though the title has been distributed relatively fairly among our top players, though I was surprised to see Brian Eley won it - I thought...

Re: British Championship 2017 Videos

You must be spoiled for choice in to pick from the round 3 games, Andrew, with all the scalps claimed it was not a good day for the titled players.

Re: International Chess Day

I think we should all play a few games to celebrate - I'll be on chesscube playing 3 minute tournaments, if anybody wants a piece of the action.

Re: Decline of Evening Chess 17/18?

I imagine it could be for lots of reasons: -adjournments: as few people these days want the extra time and expense of playing multiple sessions, and that is before we even start talking about engine influences. -room hire cost: probably an especially major factor in london where space is at a premiu...

Re: Bridge not a Sport

Oh, maybe bridge not as civilised as I imagined. Mind you, most non chess players are often shocked at some of the stories I tell them of controversies in the game, so I guess it should not be so surprising.

Does anybody have any especially amusing stories of anger during games of bridge to share?

Re: Bridge not a Sport

Bridge seems like a much more chilled out passtime too, you never hear the same stories of anger and pettiness from bridge players as you do from chess.

He even got a "bonus" 20 odd moves to try and pull that mate off, and I presume would have carried on even longer had the game ended in stalemate. You would have thought that if the game was being live streamed somebody would have noticed that it had gone past 50 moves

Clock Damage Solution

I was at a match some weeks ago when we noticed just how out of line the old clocks can become - the match started at the same time, two games ended in a massive time scramble blitz finish, yet one game ended 10 minutes before the other (obviously one was running considerably faster then the other)....

Re: The Death Of Chess Engines

As time consuming as it may seem to a human, fast computers would have no such qualms about analysing millions upon millions of positions, the only thing we are really waiting for is for the processing speed to allow this to be possible. I am sure there were many who scoffed when computers first sta...

The Death Of Chess Engines

I was looking through some other chess forums recently (yes, such heresy, I know..) and found the subject of engines "solving" chess to be a recurring theme. It made me wonder if they did reach a stage where it was possible to analyse the entire game to completion, would any further research into th...

Re: Grading and Time Limits

I played a recent London League game and won at the end of an adjournment. I have never known that getting a sealed move envelope out would be enough to force resignation. I have certainly given draws away in the past when the adjournment time comes knocking, as I have no intention of forking out t...

Re: The Mystery Of The Missing Bognor Regis Knights' Heads

Even to this very day the atrocities continue. Go to any long established club and you will find yourself stacks of mutilated kings, their crowns twisted form their heads. Not sure why this happens, I can only theorise that some players are so poor that they are taking them down to pawnbroker shops ...
