Re: Hastings

The weather was terrible? I'm guessing you haven't been there one of the years when it has snowed? (I remember playing on the pier with most players wearing coats and glovees, all the pipework frozen, the seafront like an ice rink, all roads to Hastings blocked with snow.)

Re: Lack of chess sets is not the problem

I don't think coaching is necessarily the key. OK, this is just my experience (in a grammar school in the 1960s) but we had no coaching. One master was responsible for chess and was present at the school club one night a week and must have arranged fixtures with other schools but everything else was...

Re: What did Martin Regan Do?????????????

If you look at the ECF articles and bye laws (http://www.englishchess.org.uk/organisation/general/memo-articles_apr07.htm) you will see that it would be in order for the board to delegate its powers (including the power to appoint an officer) to a committee containing at least one board member as lo...

David, the ECF does have a child protection policy. See http://www.englishchess.org.uk/organisa ... _apr05.htm

Re: Questions without answers

The only problem with this laudable plan is that the ECF does not have £1 million pounds. And it has no hope of raising such a sum either. After all, it's £100 for every player in England with a published grade! Finding this sum of money will be challenging but it is not impossible. The ECF needs...

Re: Questions without answers

I agree. The Chess Sets for Schools project is exactly what the ECF is about (promoting chess). Let's say it would cost about £1 million to do. If we were starting from scratch we might decide to spend £1 million differently but now we are committed to this scheme in the eyes of MPs and the school...

Perhaps he could write a book about this game called "The Seven Deadly Chess Curses", "Chess for Zombies" or "Pawn of the Dead"?

Re: AN EGM

Okay to help you Motion; 1. The current Chess for schools project be suspended with immediate effect. 2. The funds removed from the John Robinsons trust be returned. 3. A sub committe be formed to look into the entire project including enquires into why it became necessary for individuals to resign...

Re: No news is bad news

I showed the accounts to a friend with a bit more financial knowledge than me and he said possibly the £600,0000 is the profit (although that isn't what the accounts seem to say). Even so, the manufacturing and packing costs of 250,000 sets (at least £3 each, surely?) would still wipe out Holloid ...

Re: No news is bad news

I have just downloaded the 2007 accounts for Holloid Plastics from Companies House. They seem to be a company with a turnover of about £600,000 in 2007 (about the same in 2006). It seems unlikely that such a company would be able to donate 25,000 chess sets, let alone 250,000. (Disclaimer: I'm no a...

Re: Nominations for October 2008 AGM??

<I'm curious to know if a directive has been issued forbiding ECF officials from contributing?>

We've recently had contributions from Stewart Reuben, Chris Majer, Andrew Martin and John Philpott so we're not doing too badly.

Re: Nominations for October 2008 AGM??

The link from the ECF site has disappeared (to be expected, I suppose). I think the main priority should be to set up a site with a different domain name, rather than fighting the ECF which is both pointless and unlikely to succeed. I would be happy to pay the cost (£30 a year, from my experience) ...

Re: Using ones own clock

If you knock over pieces near a time control then you have a problem anyway, regardless of whether increments are being used. I don't see why this is an argument against increments! In my one rapidplay tournament using 10 second increments (20/10 time control) I found it fairly easy when playing end...

Re: FIDE Rule 10.2 and "by normal means"

I play in the same league as Ian Thompson. The rate in div 1 is 1 hour 25 mins plus a 5 second increment for each player, so the standard playing session of 3 hours means 60 moves each (minimum). If this were changed to 1 hour 20 minutes each plus a 5 second increment it would be 120 moves each whic...

Re: How many boards do your Leagues have?

Surrey League: 10 (Alexander Cup, knockout), 8 in divs 1 and 2 of the main league, 7 in div 3 of main league, 6 in divs 4 and 5 of main league and Lauder Trophy (knockout), 4 in two rapidplay leagues and 4 in (newly proposed) div 6.
