Re: Your 5 favourite books

I've read (and own) quite a few of the books mentioned, however I haven't read any of those listed by John Moore!

I hardly ever buy openings books any more, it's just not worth it for my standard of play and level of activity. What do other people think?

Re: Your 5 favourite books

Yes, 'Chess for Tigers' is excellent for the club player. However, I consider 'Think Like a Grandmaster' next to useless in a practical sense.

Re: Your 5 favourite books

We should also include Fischer's 60 Memorable Games, Nunn's Best Games and Alekhine's Best Games of Chess.

Re: What time control(s) does your League use?

Oxfordshire League - all the moves in 90 minutes. I agree with what Richard Palliser says. Previously, the time limit was 35 in 75 followed by a 15 minute quickplay. I've noticed that under the new time limit, a lot of palyers have made less than 35 moves by the time 75 minutes are up, meaning they ...

Virus on 4NCL Website?

I accessed the 4NCL website this morning, and later on my Anti-Virus software (Sophos) reported a virus W32/Feebs-Fam was present on my PC. It was located in a TIF or Cookie with 4ncl.co in the name. I hesitate to try and contact the 4NCL Webmaster through their website in case I get the virus again...

Returning to the original purpose of this thread, I noted in Guert Gjissen's last column on Chess Cafe, that even FIDE's own website is not consistent. Therefore it seems a bit harsh to criticise the ECF for a problem that is caused by FIDE.

I can see the arguments in favour of quickplay finishes. However, I feel they discriminate against the older player. As you get older, it's harder to maintain the level of concentration for the whole playing session, and to cap it all, of the game goes the distance, there is 30 minutes of high-inten...
