Re: General Election 2017

One of the many imponderables is people who voted for UKIP in 2015 and cannot do so this time. In many constituencies, UKIP has effectively stood aside to allow the Tories a better shot at capturing the seat from Labour. Will the former UKIP voters go with the Tories or will they return to Labour? K...

Re: General Election 2017

I agree with Jonathan, however I think we will see a lot of maverick results as well. For example, the Liberals seem confident of recapturing Oxford West and Abingdon, which would require overturning a 9,000 majority.

Scandinavian with d3 instead of d4

A recent game proceeded thus:- 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qa5 4. Bc4 Nf6 and now 5.d3 instead of the more common d4. I seem to recall Nigel Short playing this and using d4 for a Knight preventing the c8 Bishop coming to f5. I got a poor position after 5... c6 6. Bd2 Qc7 (is this necessary yet?) 7....

BBC local radio commentary QPR v Brighton

"It's like a game of chess at the moment. Both sides are feeling each other out. "

Is that what we do when we're playing chess? Not personally!

Re: 61st Southend Congress 14-17 April 2017

Hi Adam, I've entered the U-170 section but notice that there are currently only 3 entrants. Are you confident there will be enough entrants to make the section viable? Also, I notice that this is the link to the Entrants page:- http://www.southendchesscongress.org.uk/index.php/2017/entrants/11-sout...

Re: Media comments on chess

A very interesting idea, but I am not really sure what it proves. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2017 ... ciousness/ Roger Penrose was interviewed on Radio 4's Today programme this morning, at about 8:20. His point seemed to be that computers are tremendous calculators but they don't understand...

According to the BBC, there is heavy snow forecast in the night, here in the soft south (Abingdon). That might make for some interesting journeys to Telford tomorrow!

Re: Purposely creating an unbalanced game.

The book to read on this subject is Simon Webb's Chess for Tigers. Among other things, he points out that you're more likely to get a draw again a strong opponent by playing actively (luring a Heffalump into Swamp Territory) and hoping your opponent makes a mistake before you do. So imbalancing is t...

You can tell if Oxford 2 have a strong team out because I will be playing for Oxford 3!

Captain Tim has done a great job this season with Oxford 1 and that filters down to Oxford 2.

Re: Once Upon a Time in a League Match

I was once turned up for a match against the University, where although the students had managed to book a room, they didn't have any boards, sets or clocks. Beat that.

Re: French tournaments

Here is Alex Wohl's blog piece about the Hourtin tournament, wherein you can see the prizewinners being weighed for their prizes:- http://doubleroo.blogspot.co.uk/ Unfortunately, I had to withdraw 2 rounds before the end, as I injured myself falling off a bike! Still, I gained 20 rating points for m...
