Re: Rapid grades - ?

Thanks. I thought I might have gone up rather a lot; it turns out, I've gone up one point! Well I've gained 13 points without playing a single game. What's happened is that a poor result from September 2005 has dropped out of the calculations, leaving just 3 reasonably decent 5 round performances f...

Re: Board Meeting : Saturday, January 10th 2009

As also commented by David S, I recall the time line as follows:- February 2008 the good news about the 250000 free sets As announced by Claire on this forum http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=219 and the thread started by Andrew Martin here http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=24&t...

Re: Historical Grades

1) The ECF needs to clarify what entitlement, if any, inclusion on such lists would enable players to be entitled to titles under the Master Points system.
I can't do anything until 1) is resolved.
Is anybody in the least bit interested in the Master Points system?

Re: A Vision for the Future

Actually it's 96p per game. By that token basic membership is £21 because you need two people to play a game of chess. Just to make sure that we are on the same wavelength, if you get 50 players to play a 5 round Swiss and there are no exemptions or defaults then the number of games played is 125 ...

Re: A Vision for the Future

Roger your point about the 4ncl is not accurate to play 4ncl chess you have to be a member of the ecf as its a fide rated tournament My point was that there are players who do not form part of any traditional club structure. In order to play in the 4NCL you now have to be an ECF member. This is at ...

Re: A Vision for the Future

but what the Bridge Union has grasped is the need to establish a direct relationship with the clubs in order to help them survive Particularly in the South, there are a number of weekend only players. These people play in congresses and the 4NCL but are either unable or unwilling to participate in ...

Radio alert - Kasparov

Kasparov was on Radio 4 this morning being interviewed by Fergal Keane. It's repeated at 21.30 tonight and is on the BBC iPlayer for the next 7 days.

It's mostly about Kasparov v Putin rather than Kasparov v Karpov.

Re: The grading of adjourned/adjudicted games

After playing at a rhythm of 6 moves per 15 minutes My longest game this season in three hour sessions is 79 moves. I've also had a 67, 2 55s and a 53. Generally speaking, I reckon you should play at a near Jack Rudd pace for the first half of the game, say complete the first 30 in 45-60 minutes. T...

Re: The grading of adjourned/adjudicted games

I do not think there is any ECF proposal on the table to ditch the grading of adjudicated or adjourned games. The manager of coaching was writing in a personal capacity. It's only a relative handful of evening leagues that retain either practice. I think the ECF should have a policy to phase out adj...

Re: Bob Wade

Does anyone have a copy of Leonard Barden's, How to play the End Game in Chess, first published by MacMillan in 1975? The reference is on page 114 and Barden describes what could be regarded as interference with the game in progress. To paraphrase, the top board Yanofsky noticed that the Oxford pla...

Re: Kidlington Congress & 4NCL, Div3, Round 5&6

Has the Kidlington Congress been scheduled for the same weekend as 4NCL Div 3? Well as it's the 32nd Kidlington and it's been in the first weekend of February slot for as long as I can remember, it's probably more a case of the 4NCL scheduling a clash with Kidlington. Long running congresses have a...

Re: Strategic Planning Officer

I was thinking we might see a strategy starting along these lines :-
8 Qualitative Easing

The ECF graders are proposing to add free grading points to most players and don't believe this will lead to grade inflation.

5. Bd2 cxd4 6. Nd5 Qd8 (Queen in danger of getting trapped) 7. Bf4 d6 8. Nxd4 Nf6 with threats to play Nb5 hitting c7 I don't think Nb5 is much of a threat since Black simply plays Nxd5. I've found 3 games that reached this position - in 2 White took on f6 immediately , in the 3rd white punted Bb5+...
