Re: Chess Devon editorial on various issues...
This issue caused a rule change in the Mid-Sussex League a couple of seasons ago after one club was accused of fielding titled players with no connection to the club. At least one of the players actually had very good reason to play for them but feeling was such that the following overly complex (in...

Re: Incremental Time Controls
Last night the Mid-Sussex League AGM voted 18-11 in favour of allowing optional QPFs if both players agree, an excellent result.

Re: Incremental Time Controls
The solution to this is to learn the rules of course - and not to avoid quickplay finishes per se. Indeed. When I am home team captain I always precede the match with a few words to both teams - turn off your phones, arrangements for refreshments etc. It would be a simple matter to add "if both pla...

Re: Incremental Time Controls
I agree with Roger’s comments about the Mid-Sussex League – the AGM is at the end of this month and from hearsay it appears that the vote to allow QPFs (if both players agree) will be pretty close. My own club is about 75%-25% in favour of adjudications (I’m part of the 25%) but it has to be s...

Re: Mobile Phones (and Grandmasters)
So very briefly, if I play a game in the Mid-Sussex League, with ECF rating points on the table, my opponents mobile rings (or text message receipt bleep) can I stop the clocks, ask to speak with my team captain & then get a forfeit win? I'm sorry if this has been answered before but I'm rather con...

Re: Hastings
According to a friend of mine on a neighbouring board, in Cherniaev-Snape (round 7) black offered a draw in a worse position as the GM was apparently in heavy time pressure. Cherniaev refused and a couple of moves later blundered and lost. After resigning he remonstrated with Snape along the lines o...

Re: How many boards do your Leagues have?
Mid-Sussex - Divs 1-4 of the league play over 5 boards, the KO Cup is played over 6. Division 1 of the league used to play over 6 boards until a few years ago.

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?
Two years ago I made the leap of abandoning the openings I knew to start experimenting... I have played 1.Nc3 exclusively with White this season. Whilst this doesn't sound too outlandish, and is an old favourite of correspondence players, you get some excellent attacking positions if you defer d4 fo...

Re: The Arbitrary 40 point Rule
The 40 point rule says you treat any player who is graded more 40 points different to you as if the grading difference is exactly 40. Hmm. I had thought this only applied when the higher rated player won the game, so that this player did not lose points as per the previous examples. Does it also ap...
