Re: End of an era

"The Prince is not taken very seriously in Australia "

That is good - I loved the contrast of the Aussie lady and the royal expert with plummy voice, who possibly never imagined they would be in such agreement with the other one.

"No, I believe he was suspended from practising as a solicitor for eighteen months and barred for life from working in financial services."

I suppose CH would say it's not their problem, which I guess is true.

Re: End of an era

"Incidentally, I'm put in mind of this:" Reading to the end, I see that Sam Sloan seems to be involved with the publication of that stuff. Is he not a rather controversial figure himself? As for Andrew Greystoke, he seems to have attracted unwelcome (to him) attention, but he has clearly not been di...

Re: Tata Steel 10th-28th Jan 2020

There was the story of an English player (Atkins?) being offended by Capablanca and appearing before a simul by the great man, instructing the players to castle opposite sides from Capablanca, and pawn storm the king. Capa still scored heavily, but it was the worst score of the tour. However, this i...

Re: World Youth Championships

"And they obviously play blitz chess at a very leisurely pace in Dorset, him being their blitz champion and all " Hmm. However, 3 minutes + 2 seconds is harder work than 5 minutes for all moves, as already stated, that's 4 minutes for 30 moves, instead of under 5 minutes. It shouldn't cause a catast...

Re: SCCU bulletin archive

This is excellent work - I always enjoyed Richard's writing, even when he libelled me. It was better when he libelled other people of course. He did criticize people entirely correctly as well. And it was nice to see a spirited style of writing.

When I have a few spare days, I'll read all of it...

Re: Division Three South 2019-20

"One our players flew to Heathrow from the North-East so he could play. Is this a first for Division 3?" Probably not, I can't remember which division the Channel Islands team was in a few years ago, but most of the team flew in (apart from the one who doesn't like flying!) It might be a first for a...

"Yes it took a long time to get 2 cups of coffee at 10 am."

To be fair, I was only playing on Sunday and Reception were very helpful explaining how to register for car parking, and coffee arrived quickly when I asked for it. If everyone arrives at the same time, it must make it difficult!

"PS re Holiday Inn, Maidenhead, I think they should have striven to have 3 people on Reception, especially between 1245 and 1400. There were only two when I was queuing at 1325." They seemed to have 3 when people were checking out before today's game. Perhaps they went to the same training course as...

"The resolution recognizes that as a game, promoting fairness, inclusion and mutual respect, chess can contribute to an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding among peoples."

True - I notice that every time I look at the forum.

The DGT was a bit of a giveaway, and the lack of scoresheets, and lack of arbiter sitting at the end of the board!

"LOL, I can see it's only a matter of time before this thread starts to consider whether writing, "Remember to buy dog biscuits on the way home", is an offence if written on the scoresheet - and is the back of the scoresheet still a scoresheet? - but not if written on a separate piece of paper." Hard luck Richard.

Roger had the distinction of having no draws, so I applaud his fighting spirit (although I imagine he wasn't happy with the losses!)
