Re: Division One 2018-19

"This is the key argument, to my mind. The government can't, on the one hand, say that chess isn't a sport and block any efforts by it and games like bridge to be recognised as such, while then insisting that the alleged Tier 4 visa regulations apply to chess because it is a sport. If the government...

Re: Media comments on chess

I have just been shown the pilot episode of "The Middleman", a 2008 comedy/superhero TV series. It's a bit weird, including a simul by a genetically engineered gorilla, where (even more bizarrely) one of the clocks is facing the wrong way. Not sure if it counts as a media comment...

Re: Division One 2018-19

"There was a recent Court case where it was ruled that Bridge and by implication Chess were not legally sports in the UK. Rambling however is, so does walking infringe the visa conditions?"

Or running for a bus. In fairness, there's plenty of rambling on this site.

"I think the ECF Board should tie this in with the new grading proposals, perhaps with a combined ECF/Tinder rating adjusted every six months"

Monthly surely?

Re: County Chess: ECF Policy of Fines

It is difficult - on the one hand, it is really annoying if people default, but if you are an organizer and players let you down at the last minute, what can you do? Redhill discussed putting a team in one of the National Club events, everyone agreed at the AGM and committed to play, and when it cam...

Re: Ralph L. Barnett Memorial Tournament & Olive Chataway

I played in that one. David Malcolm (Surrey) and I (either NCCL or Civil Service) travelled all the way from Redhill to Poplar and played each other on Board 4 (draw).

I agree about Mike, and David was a really nice guy as well.

Re: Ralph L. Barnett Memorial Tournament & Olive Chataway

Ralph Barnett trophy was normally contested by counties surrounding London, but some other Leagues had teams in it, e.g. Civil Service, North Circular League, possibly London League at times. It was run as a jamboree event. I last played in it several years ago, no idea if it still happens. I seem t...

"But all this is rather off topic so I'll end my comments there."

It has drifted a bit! Fantastic result in the event - congratulations to all involved.

Re: weird dream - arbiting confusion

"when I got back to the playing area it was empty apart from my board and opponent and three arbiters (Nick, Kevin, Jack) all were not amused."

That's ok - we had dinner whilst we were waiting!

"Besides, as I observed last time this came up, when Isai Scheinberg wants to make a public statement explaining why he's on the Isle of Man and what should happen to the outstanding indictments against him, I'll take an interest in his defence. Until then he's just another fugitive from the law, no...

"It must be an encouraging sign that this forum is already discussing how to get rid of sponsors rather than how to find them. I hope the ECF Board takes due note." er, yes - the poll here is currently 15-6 in favour of the sponsors, which suggests most people don't care one way or the other (and wh...

Re: Arbitration question

"He said he went to the supermarket to buy things." An amusing answer... I'd be inclined to default the player, especially now, when software is quite useful. I recall a Guernsey tournament, when the time-limit was still 50 moves in 2.5 hours. The affable Gibraltarian Alan Gravett was playing someon...
