Re: British Knock out 2019

"If an invitational event takes place in Ipswich and all the invited players are members of Ipswich Chess Club, is it reasonable to call it the British something or other?" Not in my view, but it does happen. I believe there is a baseball competition in USA (Including only North American teams) call...

Re: British Knock out 2019

So complain to the sponsors? In places it wasn't a knockout, which offends my nomenclatorial sensibilities. Assuming it's a grumble that all the players were ENG, the event took place in Britain, so it was a British event. The British Grand Prix takes place in England and allows non-English cars and...

Re: UK Pun day

That's th...

"Coronavirus cruise ship in quarantine: passengers reduced to playing chess."

"There was no mass walkout on my behalf when the chief arbiter at a congress a week ago suggested to me that my hearing aids should be electonically scanned " I have raised the issue of hearing aids with ECF, so they are aware. I tend to take mine out at the start of the game and put them in their b...

"Presumably the title is an allusion (or homage) to this Soviet-era film, featuring Capablanca?"

Brilliant spot! Thanks for posting that, I haven't seen it for ages. There can't be too many films showing Reti in action.

Re: Chess Fever

Ben beat me to it, but here's my review... I have to declare a slight interest as I have spoken to Mark at various tournaments. I haven’t studied any other reviews, so there may be some repetition. The book is written from the perspective of Sam, who was a keen player as a junior, and has now return...

And the Brexit one is cheaper as well. ""Symbolic Empty Podium", indeed" I just looked at the US advert again, they do say they'll supply replacement pieces when the protagonists are confirmed. "watch out for the chlorinated roast chicken flavour crisps" Happily, crisp flavours (whatever the flavour...
