Re: Pedants United

"Isn't that a lot of wine?"

Yes - about 175 litres... 175 cubic centimetres would be better!

Re: Pedants United

"Reminds me of another retail notice: 'Six items or less' (Supermarket express checkout)." And then is a 4-pack of beer one item? (Yes.) I recall being in a pub with a poster on the wall which said (roughly) "£X FOR A 175 ML GLASS OF WINE!" Probably not many people would spot this but 175 mL (or ml)...

Re: Pedants United

I saw a good one in the local pharmacist today.

A sign said "Every item in the basket 50p". I suspect that they really meant "Each item ...", but I was tempted to carry the entire contents of the basket to the Covid barricade and offer them 50p.

Re: The new Monthly grades are out

"One strange 'feature' is that when I search on my name the results show several other players whose names are nothing like mine (I. E. Storey and Story etc). Is this an error?" I found that - having searched on "Thur", I found names starting "Thor" turned up as well. I didn't worry as there weren't...

Re: Remembering Joseph Blackburne (10-xii-1841 01-ix-1924)

"Mr. Blackburne is a tall, well-favoured Anglo-Saxon, with a short beard of transatlantic trim, is of thorough cosmopolitan address, suave and courteous, and self-possessed, even in the presence of a nineteenth century interviewer." A nice description - nowadays the newspapers would say that X (some...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

"‘I’ve just read what the WHO have issued. That’s the same WHO which wasn’t recommending face masks, and didn’t even know this was a pandemic. In my opinion they should keep their mouths shut.’ – Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis responds to the World Health Organisation after the agency criticised ...

Re: Pedants United

BBC joins in, although learning to spell with "To be or not to be" is rather an easy start.

Re: Congresses Going Ahead

"A tournament near Barcelona that I noticed a few weeks ago and thought I might play in now says it is going ahead - El Llobregat." It is an interesting idea. If any of my Sedgemoor club colleagues want to play, I suppose I could sit in the same room in Wembdon (at a safe distance) and watch, if sui...

Re: Pedants United

"Is it really true that 'It is I' is technically correct?" Yes - but it does look and sound a little odd. I was joking about everyone knowing the accusative. It helps to have been taught Latin. I have had telephone conversations which went, (I answer 'phone) (Caller) "Who's speaking?" (Me) "You are"...

Re: Pedants United

While we are on the millennium, it started on 1/1/2001 (as there was not a year zero...) I was watching a documentary about life in Australia (entitled "Neighbours") and the Head of the school said, "Between you and I". Surely everyone knows that "between" takes the accusative, so it should be "betw...
