Re: World Youth Championships

"Meanwhile, the comments on Tim Spanton's blog have become increasingly bizarre." Yes - all those posters having similar writing "styles" as well. I recall an American forum where many "different" posters were applauding Paul Truong ( a much-loved and respected character in USA), and some humorist p...

Re: Leonard Barden's last Evening Standard column

I must join the general acclamation! Now we've seen the obituary game, there's no hurry to read the obituary. With the Guardian column, what an incredible record, which I'm sure will never be equalled.

Re: The French System

"So how did the 'English chess explosion' of the 1970s come about - was it entirely the Fischer effect and Leonard Barden's junior training?"

As David said, and Bob Wade was coaching too. Of course there's a lot more coaching now...

Re: British Championship Congress 2020

"It's very strange. It's even a lot easier than the old route (before the clampdown on 'easy' qualification when Alex was Home Director) which was a 2400 performance I think. At least IMO it should require, say, three such performances. One of the arguable issues with the qualification routes is tha...

"James Graham e mails to tell me the very probable broadcast date in the UK will be Monday 13th April and then, on each of the two successive nights, parts Two and Three also."

Thanks for that - I'll be watching!

Re: World Youth Championships

I couldn't remember that tournament but have now checked and I got +0=2-3 against a lower rated opponents in one of the 5-round events, which is why I couldn't remember it. Obviously, there were some distinguished opponents in the Open. Was Ray Keene playing that year?

Re: Media comments on chess

"In case you missed it - Channel 4's "The Great Pottery Throw Down" - this week's challenge was to make a chess set. Very interesting designs." Watched this tonight. Yes - really interesting designs. References to castles and horses raised my ire, and someone said he would make his pawns "prawns" - ...

Re: Gibraltar 2020

If it's any consolation to David, I played Chris Purry in Somerset League last night. The game was fluctuating anyway, I seemed to be winning an exchange, but he gave up queen for knight to get two dangerous passed pawns. I then blundered an exchange, and he queened one of the pawns and I forced the...
