The surname looks right though EDIT: ‘дж’ is a kind of last-bit-of gara ge sound which I guess is as close as you...

Re: Jonathan Penrose

The Olympiad board orders give a clue as to respective rankings. Maybe. Wasn’t Hartston board 1 because he was British Champion though? I think that was the tradition back then. I could be wrong. Miles was awared the GM title at Haifa as was Ray. Ray admittedly only on the last day for his performa...

Re: Jonathan Penrose

Over the years I did manage to locate a couple of articles about Penrose: It’s not about Penrose exactly but there’s a chapter in Keene’s Becoming a Grandmaster - "What Went Wrong in the 1960s" - that mentions him a lot. Not particularly favourably. E.g. "Penrose’s attitude towards international co...

Re: Jonathan Penrose

... Resident in a distinctly minor county, Bedfordshire, I occasionally progressed to the Zonal Stage which for me then extended to London. Games were individually arranged and nearly always played in private houses, usually at weekends. It was exciting and sometimes faintly embarrassing for me to ...

Re: Cheating in chess

I play games online like that all the time! Playing the role of you opponent. Just substitute the word "brain" for "engine"... Sure. But I would expect you to be able to play to a decent standard. And I would imagine you would have an online rating that would indicate you could play well when brain...

Re: Cheating in chess

Chess.com writing articles saying they're wonderful doesn't count for much. It's a bit like some of the websites advertising nutritional supplements with great medical claims, endorsed by an "expert". When you search for the "expert", you find they have no science qualifications at all, and all the...

Re: www.chessgames.com

Your 12 mover, it may be the exact same game played by someone else or do the dates and location of your game match? Definitely me. Date opponent and tournament all correct. Instead of me they’ve got an IM with an extremely similar name (who wasn’t at the tournament). I’d tell them but I don’t know...

Working for me too.

I’ve got a game on there that I lost in 12 moves but they’ve attributed it to someone else. I Just checked. It’s still there.

Well we seem to be on our way out of lockdown now (I suspect we’ll be heading back in a couple of months but that’s by the by).

How did you get on over with this project over the last few months?

I owned a Kasparov Stratos (I probably still have it in a box somewhere) and I vaguely recall that might have guested once, but I could be wrong. Today on The Abysmal Depths of Chess: Are you better than a Kasparov Stratos? https://theabysmaldepthsofchess.blogspot.com/2020/06/btm-9a-beat-kasparov-s...

It’s a good time to be watching chess online, that’s for sure.

The theme is interesting. Is there any indication as to what this means in practice?

Re: Sexism in chess

Without disagreeing with the central point, I think it important to remember that when we talk about increasing the number of women / girls playing chess we mean ... the way we play (tournament or club chess). I would go a bit further and include online. Yes, fair enough. The main idea I was trying...
