Re: End of an era

I seem to recall that the "map of Ireland" was more the shape of Lancashire. The alleged victim was from Lancashire. However, if the accused said he invented the diagrams to confuse people then it doesn't actually matter what it depicts. The ‘map’ can be seen here:- http://streathambrixtonchess.blo...

I appreciate that this is not an ECF Forum (I do not think it has one!)
Probably just as well not to reopen that particular can of worms

Re: Media comments on chess

A main story in today's papers is that playing board games helps keep your memory sharp in old age. However there are more references to Bingo than chess and the Telegraph delights in telling us that "bingo was just as good as chess, cards or crosswords for improving thinking skills." . Anyway off ...

Re: Cheating in chess

Are there currently players cheating over-the-board in chess? How can organizers combat this? ... How can we fight cheating? The cheaters can probably be held at bay by the fear of financial implications. For example, imposing fines in the amount of the first prize of the competition where the chea...

Re: Chess.Com getting sued.

Statistics is a subject where otherwise intelligent people can have the most extraordinary blind spots. Agreed Nick. But chess.com - chessers and computer cheating in general - don’t really have this excuse. E.g. the problem of match-up analysis being corrupted by knowing when a player’s opening bo...

Re: Chess.Com getting sued.

But possibly not as much as their business model would be hurt by making claims that cannot be true and by making defamatory comments about users of their site. FWIW I rather suspect that, on the contrary, it’s precisely the intention of supporting the business model which is driving chess.com’s be...

Re: ECF ACCREDITED COACH: COMPLAINTS SYSTEM?

Interesting - so if you aren't there, what would the children do? Is this the same for secondary and primary? Like Alex, for any after school club - or any other situation for that matter - I was* always sure to be in place before any children arrived. I don’t know about what would happen with Alex...

Re: ECF ACCREDITED COACH: COMPLAINTS SYSTEM?

It's normal practice for a school to require one of its teachers to be responsible for an after-school chess club and to be in loco parentis sitting in the room .... Not in London* it isn’t. I personally took clubs after school/ at lunchtime in dozens and the number I supervised indirectly must hav...

Re: ECF ACCREDITED COACH: COMPLAINTS SYSTEM?

Indeed.

I certainly wouldn’t expect the chess tutor to routinely roll in at xx:yy o’clock and/or the tutor presuming somebody else will set up the room for the lesson because the coach is never there to do it

Re: ECF ACCREDITED COACH: COMPLAINTS SYSTEM?

It is therefore possible that some coaches are unaware of what has happened and may still be "trading" under the title. I forgot to respond to this in my previous replies. FWIW I suspect it’s most likely that this is the case here. Or perhaps it’s an old website which has not been updated or has be...

Re: ECF ACCREDITED COACH: COMPLAINTS SYSTEM?

It gives all of us a bad reputation if we ignore complaints. Quite. "We" being chess players in general and the "ECF" in particular. I’ve been contacted by a couple of people asking, "is it X". Both were wrong. As we’re talking about the south of the country, Andrew Zigmond may also be wrong with h...

Re: ECF ACCREDITED COACH: COMPLAINTS SYSTEM?

However it would not solve the immediate problem, namely the refund of fees. Does the ECF need to be involved? Make a claim at the Small Claims Court. This was my initial thought but on further discussion it became clear that this suggestion rather misses the point - for reasons that have largely a...

Re: ECF ACCREDITED COACH: COMPLAINTS SYSTEM?

Back onto the topic, Since posting I’ve had more information about what’s happened. We seem to be talking about a dozen missed sessions over 2-3 years. That’s around £600-700 worth of fees taken and not refunded. That’s not considering the fact that the sessions that did take place routinely started...

Re: ECF ACCREDITED COACH: COMPLAINTS SYSTEM?

Does the ECF have a complaints system for their accredited coach scheme. (...) So my question is, what would the ECF do (if anything) should they receive a complaint about this person. I'm sure raising it here is the way to find out - there's certainly no point emailing the ECF or the Junior Direct...

I assumed that Jonathan had already done that.
I haven’t myself but my understanding is that communications from an involved party to the ECF either have already been sent or soon will be.
