Re: New in Chess - Nigel Short

Odd that Nige should not have mentioned it on his twitter feed yet. He’s not normally shy and retiring after all Nigel has referenced it on his twitter feed but I don't think anyone has put a link to it on this thread: Thanks Chris Looks like that got tweeted a couple of days after my post - althou...

Re: Should the ECF have accepted sponsorship from the Scheinbergs for the World Team Championships 2019?

It does seem to be a parody, but these guys may offer sponsorship... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jan/24/salisbury-novichok-attack-board-game-on-sale-russia And why - if we are taking money from anybody - wouldn’t we snap off their hands? Or, are we saying that there is a limit - be it DC...

Re: Should the ECF have accepted sponsorship from the Scheinbergs for the World Team Championships 2019?

I trust you are nowhere near membership of the Governance Committee. I wonder if “accept money from anyone” would include taking sponsorship from the software company that publishes “Diana Crash Simulator”. As Streatham Rovers FC have just done. https://twitter.com/streathamrovers/status/1095300111...

Re: New in Chess - Nigel Short

Do we know if ‘dismissal’ is quite the right word here? My informant, who had been present at the Q&A session in Gibraltar phrased it as "Nigel said he'd been sacked". There's a video embedded in the chessbase link below (one and half hours) which may throw some light. https://en.chessbase.com/post...

... is reported to have announced his dismissal whilst at the Gibraltar tournament. Do we know if ‘dismissal’ is quite the right word here? By which i mean was Short sacked - because he did something to upset his employer or otherwise - or was the column just brought to an end, NiC deciding to move...

"It’s essentially a one-man bad isn’t it?"

Do you mean that? Or is it "band"!?
Typo. I meant band. I have amended.

Ah, Chess Club Live. I thought I remembered them.
Him rather than them, I think. It’s essentially a one-man band isn’t it?

Re: Health benefits of brain games

I read them as a correction since they provide no scientific citation which was what those challenging the article were after. The quote also fails to provide any explanation as to why ‘chess’ and ‘brain training’ should be treated as the same thing Article on brain training from 2014 here > http:/...

Re: Chess & Bridge Withdraw Ray Keene's Book from Sale

Chess & Bridge have withdrawn from sale Ray Keene's book on the Carlsen - Caruana World Championship Match. This is an extraordinary story in its own way. It’s hard to imagine what Everyman were thinking of when they chose to publish this one. I suppose if you publish a dozen Lakdawala books a mont...

Re: Health benefits of brain games

John Foley's not got a good track record, has he? I’m afraid not. I asked him a few years back to provide supporting evidence for his claims. He didn’t then. I quite sure he won’t now if you asked him. The real tragedy of all this - as per my previous comments earlier in this thread - is that there...

Looks like you missed Roger using the term"Arkell" ending of KRB v KR. a few post before mine. I ran that ending through chessgames.com to see how many you had...just curious to what your win/draw ratio was. Last I heard it was +18 =0 -0. Re: London Chess Classic

I’ve worked every year at Olympia for the past five years. Won’t be there this year. I was never involved in the main event or the tournaments for experienced chessers but I can tell you this: However much time and effort you think goes in to running the event, the reality is it’s more than that. Ma...
