Re: Incremental Time Controls

... the QPF rules proposed for the MSL are only used if both players agree to them and both participants should therefore be expected to know the extra rules .... In my experience the vast majority of club players (myself included) do not have a full - or even partial in many cases - grasp of the r...

Re: Mike Bushell

The report itself was quite interesting. He began by saying that chess was being revitalised by this link with boxing!! and ended by saying that there were many good boxers who played chess, but now good chess players were training to become boxers. ... and he provided all sorts of evidence to supp...

Re: Any chance of The Master Game returning to tv?

I like this idea - grandmaster + celebrity. But it could drive the GMs up the wall! This has in fact already been tried. We had a GM come to our club for a simul who told us the story of his involvement (he was partnered by Craig Charles if I recall correctly) in a filmed tester of such an event. T...

Re: Any chance of The Master Game returning to tv?

I think if the podcasts emphasised the league standings then at least people can follow that, bit like world strongest man, hardly anyone who watches tries or knows how to lift the stuff but they like to follow the score of certain teams/players. That is why I suggested it. Ben I'm with Stewart on ...

Re: Any chance of The Master Game returning to tv?

Jonathan Bryant is correct to say that WE do not need TV as we have the internet. TV is needed to bring into chess people for whom the game is at best peripheral. I completely accept the distinction between 'serious' (for want of a better word) chess players - i.e. us lot - and the casual player. T...

Re: Any chance of The Master Game returning to tv?

... I guess its a case of who the programs are being made for and why are they being made. Exactly - hence the prospects for any chess programme that might currently be made are not good for us as serious players. I'm sure the old Master Game's are still watchable - I just don't think we're likely ...

Re: A horrible way to get relegated

... the league have taken the 2 none finished games as draws and the finished games will stand so we lost 3 2 to rub salt into the wounds we won our final game tonight.I think last weeks game should be replayed .... I don't see why your team should have to travel twice (unless you want to for some ...

Stewart Reuben wrote:Has anybody else watched the Bridge programme?
It was awful and I am not certain that it helped the cause of Bridge at all.
I didn't watch the programme so make no judgement about it but it's exactly this kind of reaction that I would expect should a chess programme ever make it to TV these days.

Re: Any chance of The Master Game returning to tv?

Fair enough.

This whole argument presupposes that chess on TV would be a 'good thing'. I'm actually far from convinced it would be (in reality - assuming it ever happened at all - as opposed to what we might hope we would get)

Re: Any chance of The Master Game returning to tv?

But shouldn't the "loads of tv channels" argument work the other way, if anything?? Well this is a failure to understand that more options (channels in this case) does not necessarily mean more choice. As a by-the-by the difference between more 'nominal' choice and more 'real' choice is (on the who...

Re: Incremental Time Controls

.... and most players I talked to found the time control (20 minutes plus 10 second increment) much more satisfactory than a 30 minute rapidplay. I think I'd be in this camp too ... although I wonder what tournament organisers (Adam Raaof are you there?) would think about this? As I recall it's a f...

Re: Incremental Time Controls

I think one reason why many of the "elite" players don't like increments is that they have given organisers carte blanche to introduce a huge range of different time controls (and also, under cover, significantly speed up the games as well). This is something which i think is being changed in July ...

Re: Incremental Time Controls

... if you go to chess tournaments, people gather to watch time scrambles - Are we sacrificing excitement in order to make arbiters' lives' easier? In my opinion, this is not the way to go. Justin Horton is, I think, away from his computer for a few days so I'll make a point on his behalf. Justin h...

Re: Incremental Time Controls

The problem with 30 second increments for an evening league is what do you do at closing time? Indeed. This is the reason, I think, why incremental time controls will never be universally used in club chess. For the most part you simply need to know the boundaries within which the game's can be exp...

Re: Incremental Time Controls

Jonathan, Just think about it, Mickey was number 4 in the World, so the question is, Would you like to continue playing with things that you are the fourth best on the planet with, or try something different? eh, a no-brainer I would suggest. Well yes I'm sure you're right. The reason why I found i...
