Re: Proposed abolition of Quick Play finishes

I have known Paul for two decades, and Stewart since 1971. Paul can be very critical, however, when he is, he is very direct. Many of us associate FIDE with Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, I know Paul does. Thus when Paul gave an unorthodox rendition of the meaning of the acronym FIDE, I was certain he was allu...

Re: Andrew Paulson -- Candidacy for ECF President

... I'm happy to answer all questions myself, no holds barred. Andrew's candidacy might appear to some to be a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. The offer of a debate à outrance is therefore to be welcomed. It could be that, as well as hoping to win the election, he wants to disperse...

Re: Membership renewals

One guess is that it charges for ten months, deducts the £ 1 and rounds to the nearer 10p. Doesn't tell us why though. On the spreadsheet the record shows that my membership expires in October. If it's done on a monthly basis, one could arrive at the number ten. Not corrected for me though. My mem...

Re: Membership renewals

I received an email today. It included the words: ... we have finally corrected the system and that you will now be able to renew on-line for the coming season at the correct rates. As a good London boy, I naturally logged on. I was asked for £22.30, which seems a couple of quid shy of 11/12 of £2...

Thanks, Ian. One thing's for sure: silence is not golden.

Re: Membership renewals

I received an email from the Federation dated 3rd September. I believe it was sent to all affected who had supplied an email address. Included in the text were the words: In the meantime could I please ask you defer renewing your membership for a few days until we are able to confirm to you that the...

Re: Nominations for the elections at the ECF AGM

Not sure I'm getting your point there, Simon. It's a terran thing, Justin. It's called humour. To resurrect, with added remarks for Justin's benefit, what he, in his rush, has largely excised. There's something to be said for having a pair of Americans at the head of ECF. Paulson & Ehr could import...

Re: Nominations for the elections at the ECF AGM

There's something to be said for having a pair of Americans at the head of ECF. Paulson & Ehr could import significant lessons from the American experience. After all, we readily look to the USCF as an exemplar of probity, unity, financial efficiency, inter-collegial restraint and all-round profess...

Re: Membership renewals

I got two of these e-mails today (both sent early this morning and identical apart from the time they were sent as far as I can see). They tell me my 3 year Gold membership is "up for renewal" and the cost of renewing in my current membership category is £2.30 if I do it online or £3.30 if I rene...

It's quite simple. Go to a website that imbeds the chessbomb widget, e.g. http://susanpolgar.blogspot.co.uk/ . Just resize the browser to hide the other frames.

Re: Membership renewals

Provided you can remember both the email address used and the password ... This is extremely easy. Without wishing to take sides in the Windoze-Linucks wars, all one has to do is use a password manager, for instance KeePass (KeePassX in Linux). One then has only the one, very long, password to reme...

Re: Books on Soviet Chess

A good post from Tim. While we are on propaganda, I believe that the Ukrainians finally intend to bring out something new on Bogatyrchuk (Bohatirchuk when he was in Canada) which may include an English translation of his notorious memoir which has up to now only been available in English as a brief ...

Re: Books on Soviet Chess

Those of a certain age will recall Red Robbo, I expect his response to much in this thread would be a variation of "For Finnigan's sake!". I suppose, nonetheless, that I should be grateful to be spared links to inaccurate web pages vetted by committees of clowns. Any translated, non-trivial work of ...
