Re: ECF Library has opened!

Ah John - sorry my lack of a sense of humour. John Moores though - and although I am enormously successful - not quite as much that family. To whom strangely enough, my wife is related - although her name is only mine by marriage

Re: ECF Library has opened!

John Hi I have never had a catalogue - what are you on about! I have been a buyer and seller of chess books for many years - and a collector for even longer

Re: Moderation Information

But where's the chess? I back Jack on this - otherwise we all finish putting anything we find funny on this site - don't we. Then we get links to all sorts of irrelevant sites - which happens on a lot of similar forums.

Re: How many boards do your Leagues have?

I am asking all the clubs to look in their cupboards - do you need to know about sets and clocks as well.

Sorry couldn't resist it - sometimes this forum seems a bit too serious to me, although there are plenty of serious issues about.

Re: Grading levels

Brilliant Roger - I knew you'd explain it to someone with a non - Maths degree. I expect to be a very fat fish for the sharks - if I get too close to one. Why have I lost 14 points and you haven't - must be our choice of lager!

Re: Grading levels

Dunno about 200 being master level - even this incompetent has been close to that in years past and people would have laughed if you'd said I was a master. Maybe 215 is a good place to put it but then next year don't all the 200s become 215 or something like anyway. I'd have thought if I was 215, I ...

Re: ECF Library has opened!

I'll resist the temptation to make any Jordan jokes. I have to confess, however, that I don't know the identity of the Jordan who kindly donated the books. However, having skimmed through some parts of the catalogue, this looks like a fantastic resource with some really interesting titles. However, ...

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?

Distracting other players is one issue - surely the deliberately bit is too high a test, though. The idiots playing silly moves before agreeing a draw don't do it deliberately to distract other players - it's just an outcome and involves a crowd gathering round. I would certainly give them 0-0. I al...

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?

Sorry but I haven't found this thread ridiculous at all - I think that Stewart was right earlier on when he said something like I may not be able to define bringing the game into disrepute but I know it when I see it and I am sure, Michael, you agree that Dave Tebb's game quoted earlier in the threa...

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?

By the way, if you do get to play me in the 4NCL, County matches or Leagues I don't normally offer the draw till I get to the venue - and start the game - and sometimes not even then.

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?

This is the kind of thing you tell your mates about in advance as I said earlier - just don't bother about the poor guys on the boards around you trying to agree their draws properly

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?

Not sure about this one. If I am 2060 and I play someone who is 2500 or whatever, I think I would be quite pleased if he started playing rubbish - probably still lose but my friends would be thinking after about 10 moves WOW - the king is on f7 already. Then I could sell the game to KingPin with my ...

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?

Hi Jack

Your research is as always useful - and the guy playing White is 2060 - about my rating these days. Mind you I don't think we'll see Dangerous Weapons 1e4 f5 anytime soon. However, Eric Schiller might be planning something as we speak.

Re: When is it bad manners to play silly openings?

The point about two players playing silly moves, having previously agreed a draw is simple and Stewart will remember this from at least one of the episodes he recalls. They have to tell all of their friends in advance who then stand around the board greeting each successive inanity with barely conce...
