Re: FIDE Regain Control of World Championship Match and Candidates Tournament

Have FIDE yet published the revised contract with Agon which was agreed at some point prior to last year's election and which Nigel Short complained, during the election compaign, of not having had sight of?

Re: Incremental controls - the `unlimited` game.

With a thirty second increment, players are required to keep score. With a lesser increment they're not. 8.4 If a player has less than five minutes left on his clock at some stage in a period and does not have additional time of 30 seconds or more added with each move, then for the remainder of the ...

Re: ECF Membership List

I wrote to Andrew and he's helpfully provided a link to the (password protected) Organisers' Area of the ECF website from where the membership list is now downloadable.

Re: ECF Membership List

There was a round-robin email from Andrew Walker (ECF office) on or about 19 December stating that "We have been reviewing our publicly available information in order to meet both the letter and spirit of the requirements of GDPR..." and explaining what provisions the ECF expected to make to enable...

Re: Steve Berry

Am sad and a little shocked to hear Steve has passed away. I knew him a little (from Surrey league chess, county matches and playing at Paignton). He was friendly and observant (taking an interest in other people's games, for example), had interesting and relevant things to say and a dry sense of hu...

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

The deadline for July (e.g.) is normally about 15th July. Leagues are normally finished in the middle of May, so a league grader has maybe 6 weeks to get the results in. I suspect there's a heavy element of graders working to a deadline, and if the deadline was tighter (as it is in January), they'd...

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

To make it credible, monthly grading would have to be done to a similar timetable to FIDE, namely that you have a reporting cutoff a few days before the month end and you aim for publication on the last day of the month, or the first day of the following month. Hmm. For evening chess leagues, teams...

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

If Month Played is unknown (or not easily discoverable) cannot Month Reported be used? But is not a greater issue with the idea of monthly grading the fact that it currently takes something like 23 days (I think two weeks for the local results officers to submit and then nine days for the central gr...

Re: How many casual players?

In the latest Board (125th) minutes Malcolm outlined the key points from the paper and supporting note. Malcolm said that it was critical to reach out to the millions of casual players who do not currently engage with the ECF, Where does he get that count from? Is it on the same scale as the 600 mi...

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

I think therefore Council gets to discuss this before it comes in? Only if requisitionists force such a discussion, I suspect. If the new system is going be introduced for 2019 - 2020, that would have to happen at the Finance Council Meeting on Saturday 27th April 2019. The last Home Director did a...

Re: Repercussions / Fallout from FIDE Elections?

Nigel tweeted on 9 Nov: "A quiet revolution is taking place in FIDE. Roughly one third of the commissions, and almost one third of the commissioners, were axed today. This was a necessary change, but nevertheless quite breathtaking." So which commissions and commissioners have gone and why? Can't s...
