Re: The Chess Traveller

He might well be the chap with this grading code 143344B
At 140, or so, he is a reasonable player, but it looks like he didn't get the opportunity to play that much, perhaps because he was penniless?
I think I'd be open-minded on this one.

Re: Media comments on chess

There is a picture of a chess player on the BBC sport homepage. I'll leave you to read the story and see if you can work out why

Re: The case for scrapping "Player of the Year"

I don't think the award should be scrapped, because it is a good way of focusing attention on the successes of the previous year. I am not terribly bothered who wins.

Re: PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2017

Chess Scotland seems to have a perfectly good system for selecting a player of the year. Players are nominated, a shortlist drawn up. Members are E-mailed. We vote (once!!). The person who gets the most votes wins. There is no set criteria, so I've voted for Alex MacFarlane, Neil Berry and Jonathan ...

Re: General Election 2017

Predicting a hung parliament before the election just gone was relatively easy. Predicting the result of a new election in the next few months is much harder. I disagree. Labour did better than most people expected for three reason 1. The Tories had a poor leader 2. The Tory manifesto was awful 3. ...

Re: General Election 2017

At the last general election the betting markets predicted that the Tories would do better than the polls suggested, but this really came nowhere near the actual result. Brexit the betting market just got wrong (Brexit was still something like 10-1 after the polls had closed) and the same with Trump.

Re: General Election 2017

FWIW, spread betting sites are currently suggesting an overall Tory majority of 70+ seats. The betting picture is very complicated, but in some way it mimics the brexit market, so 80% of the bets are for Jeremy Corbyn to be the next PM, but 80% of the money is on Theresa may to be the next PM. Poss...

Re: Mr Barden's Guardian Article

I think Leonard has a problem with the naming of many of the teams. If you know nothing about cricket or football, you can still get behind Sussex or Liverpool because of some accident of birth. It is unlikely that many non-chess players will be rooting for Cheddleston. How many non-chess players wo...

Re: Media comments on chess

If I understand Turing's algorithm for Turochamp then it would easily find the correct solution. It is maybe that this methodology couldn't 'evaluate' the position, but does that really show the limitation for the computer when you are setting a somewhat arbitrary challenge of approximating a discre...

Seems like this has come from a similar source to other British Championship sponsorship. All good news.
