Stalemate wins in K + P versus K

"Stalemate wins if the king is blocked by an enemy pawn on the seventh rank" Nigel Short has suggested that stalemate should count as win, as in Xiangqi. However, I am against the introduction of this rule in Western chess, since so many fine qualities are lost. I suggest instead K + P versus K as o...

Re: Carlsen's performance at Tromsö

Tal didn't play unsound. Tal played unsound a lot of the time. The idea was to intimidate his opponent into making unsound moves in tactically complex positions. Often the method would work; sometimes it would backfire. As for Carlsen, he's a free agent. He's not "responsible" to the chess communit...

Re: Carlsen's performance at Tromsö

Tal and Lasker had strong credos. Tal didn't play unsound. He sacrificed a piece for good chances, which is sound. To give two pawns for no compensation, as in Carlsen's game, isn't sound. In the following game, Botvinnik regarded the knight sacrifice on f4 as a bluff move. But research shows that i...

Re: The bragging thread

Instructive in what way? It's instructive positional play. All I did was to build up pressure on the weak points. So I didn't really need to think. The game played itself. Already from the first move I exerted pressure on the weakest point. Then I continued with this throughout the game. Chess is s...

Re: Carlsen's performance at Tromsö

I am speaking, of course, of the responsibility a world champion has to play sound chess. Of course, we can't expect every game to be a master-piece, but we can at least expect soundness and stability. A world champion shouldn't self-destruct and he should know his way in the opening phase.

Carlsen's performance at Tromsö

Carlsen didn't perform as a world champion at Tromsö. His game against Saric was very bad. I don't know why this hasn't been discussed more. A world champion should be able to prove his superiority. At least, he shouldn't lose against secondary players. Is Carlsen sandbagging, for some reason? Or is...

Re: FIDE Online Arena

(There is actually a function which stores games on the hard drive.) It is now possible to subscribe to Fide Arena without having a Fide rating already, and get a rapid Fide rating. The list will be published on Fide's homepage. The rating seems to come down to normal levels now.

Re: Carlsen - Nakamura

One must have a credo in chess and in life as a whole. To argue that anything goes, as long as one improves the score and makes more money, etc., is characteristic of the depraved modern era, when people have lost their belief in all higher ideals and traditions and only believe in self-promotion. P...

Carlsen - Nakamura

Carlsen's play is praised, but facts are that Nakamura played anti-positional chess. It was very, very bad. I don't like his style of play, which violates the positional laws of chess. Super-GMs should endeavour to play beautiful and sound games. http://en.chessbase.com/post/gashimov-r2-clear-leader...

Re: FIDE Online Arena

I've been playing rapid chess for a time now, on Fide Online Arena. It functions fine. A big advantage is that if one loses connection, the software reconnects automatically. There are no lost or adjourned games. However, the level of play is much inferior to FICS and ICC. Many players are over-rate...

Re: FIDE Online Arena

Fide Online Arena is now officially launched. If you have a Fide id-code you are entitled to one month free membership. The system builds on an AI-algorithm that checks the games to see whether cheating occurs, that is, whether the game looks computerish. Thus, they can use real Fide ratings. One mu...

errors in simple positions

I played this game on FICS. I was so certain that the endgame was won so I didn't pay attention. It is so typical. I really didn't know that knight + rook pawn is a draw in the position after move 56, although it is obvious, since the knight cannot gain tempo. /Mats [Event "15+2"] [Site "Free Intern...
