Re: What would you pay for a title?

Josh bin rapid chess improvement as it is total twaddle :) I made the same mistake a few years ago - it doesn't do what is says on the tin. But I'm very glad you have got this perfectly good topic off arguments about the rules off chess, which so many topics here these days seem to degenerate into :(

Re: Pawn Sacrifice (Bobby Fischer film)

Over dramatized pap it is. If you want entertainment that is chess related but not very convincing then you'll enjoy it. It was too dumbed down for my liking. I was personally looking forward to Heath Ledger's direction of Walter Tevis's novel "The Queen's Gambit" a book universally slagged off by ...

Re: Pawn Sacrifice (Bobby Fischer film)

I’ve been trying to track down any sort of release date on this, details seem very sketchy and have done for the past year really. Toby Maguire is a medium big draw name thanks to Spiderman, so you would expect some sort of general release for the film. I’ve got a suspicion like “Bobby Fischer again...

Re: Chess on TV

Chess can be live, but you're right, live broadcasts of just one game do have the dead air problem. A tournament with multiple games going on simultaneously is more viewer-friendly. Yes, I spent some time in the commentary room at the British and that worked well. They were analysing the top 6 boar...

Re: Re:

Standard Play Chess cannot be televised live. Neither can a poker tournament. It's too boring. It's also too long. Highlights would work and I would love it if those highlights were prepared with annotations by experts with charisma and a bit of humour such as Danny King. Rapid Chess would also wor...

Re: resigning a game by tossing the board in the air

There is always the "I've got a train to catch!" gambit... I won't name names, but a certain loopy female player, well known for causing trouble was paired against my mate Dave at a local congress a few years ago (much to his annoyance "F*%$ no!!!" was his responce). He knew it was going to be fun w...

Re: resigning a game by tossing the board in the air

Many have played the slightly less extreme "sweep the pieces off the board" gambit at some occasion, I suspect..... I have. Once. Over 30 years ago  I once earned the title "King Flicker" - at the time I used to knock over my king in resignation, on one particular occasion I did it a little t...

Re: resigning a game by tossing the board in the air

Personally I would have loved to be his opponent, I always enjoy watching people visibly anguished when they have lost to me, much better to stop the clock (well before checkmate, but after all hope of saving the draw has gone) stick your hand out with a smile and say “well played” while keeping a t...

Re: 6th 4NCL FIDE Rated Congress

Well I’ve just upgraded to Gold and gone in Major.

Noticed an error on the website, the U130 section says only open to players U125 - might want fixing that :) http://www.4ncl.co.uk/fide/information_06.htm

Re: Drinking alcohol while playing.

I tend to avoid it in congresses these days, but still usually have a beer with the game in the league (hard to walk into a pub and order a coke lol) I don’t think it will be helping my play, but I’ve not noticed a lot of difference. I find a pint or two perks me up after a day at work, so I suppose...

Re: BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP 2016 & 2017

Did I read recently that the world senior championship was played aboard a cruise ship? Walter Brown won it on that occasion.

Personally I’m not opposed at all to the idea - play your game, then stop off and explore the next port. Mind you I don’t get sea sick!

Re: BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP 2016 & 2017

Plenty of bridge and poker events on cruise ships - so no reason it shouldnt work, other than chess players being botoriously tighter than those other two groups. Paul Poker players do tend to be a bit richer though ;) was watching a pro poker player on Full tilt the other week drop $40,000 dollars...

Re: King & Queen v King & Rook ending

The one time I had it, I couldn’t do it and after messing around for ages, I wound up just taking the Rook with my queen in frustration making it a K vs K draw. I did some studying up on it afterwards, but this was a couple of years ago, not sure I’d be able to win it again now.
