Re: Pawn Sacrifice (Bobby Fischer film)

I’ve been trying to track down any sort of release date on this, details seem very sketchy and have done for the past year really. Toby Maguire is a medium big draw name thanks to Spiderman, so you would expect some sort of general release for the film. I’ve got a suspicion like “Bobby Fischer agai...

Re: Any comments about this game I played

2.Nf6 not one of Frank’s best ever ideas :) I used to get a lot of these in the minors when I was a QG player. It isn't loosing for black though, a couple of years ago a few CC players in the 2200+ grading area used it against me, with some early Queen moves soon after.

Re: Sir Jeremy Morse

How good a player was he - looks like he gave up over the board chess a long time ago. Haven’t seen a single one of his games, can anyone enlighten us? My guess is not overly, strong it looks like he enjoyed puzzles more than playing, probably an after effect of the crossword composers brain. I won...

Re: Sir Jeremy Morse

Morse (the detective) always had a Chess set on stand-by in his front room, and in one episode he was seen duffing up an old lady OTB, at the end of the story - When Lewis said "You could have let her win the Chess sir!" Morse responded scornfully "That's the worst form of deception Lewis". There wa...

Re: Grading Cheat or Patzer?

JustinHorton » Wed Feb 03, 2016 12:09 pm Just on the money thing, we know that lots of people cheat online with computers. Lots of them. They don't make any money that way: they just get to win games and tournaments. This fact alone would seem to render null and void any suggestion that motives for...

Re: Grading Cheat or Patzer?

I agree that money won’t be the only issue; in fact I’d go as far as to say ego is the main one, especially at the higher levels. I know several major players that are terrified of busting the grading cap and ending up in the opens - the reason isn’t financial, as they rarely get a top prize in the ...

Re: Frodsham Congress, 5th-7th February

This excellent Congress, played at the pleasant venue on the outskirts of Historic Market town of Frodsham is a definite quality event, and I`d urge support from our Northern contingent, and those further afield. A good weekends chessing is assured.. A wonder into the town for a browse or food and ...

Re: Grading Cheat or Patzer?

Yes, perpetrated in a famous simultaneous display by a nobody against a group of titled players I believe. You mean this one - http://en.chessbase.com/post/derren-brown-s-che-trick-once-more-with-feeling ? I saw that on Youtube recently, I don’t think that is what is been talked about here though. ...

Re: The January Grading List is out!

We’ll I’ve managed to go down… by a point! It could have been worse, after a string of pretty good results I allowed the very pleasant, but decidedly modest graded Margaret Rowley from Harrogate CC to get a draw out of me in the Yorkshire league - I bit her hand off for that too as it was a lost en...

Re: Using a computer in correspondence chess

To be honest I think computers have more killed than improved correspondence chess - I’ve tried taking it seriously many times on various sites and by post. But it just becomes too much like hard work when you can tell your opponent is using computer analysis and / or endless databases, the games ju...

Re: Playing early moves fast to avoid time trouble. (long games)

All this been said do take care, it’s much better to be in time trouble than to end up in a terrible position and / or material down from the start, if you know the move order fine, but if things start to a bit wayward, take a moment or two. I screwed up a Colle recently as white when my opponent pl...

Re: Playing early moves fast to avoid time trouble. (long games)

I usually bash out the opening pretty quick, especially as white, it’s very rare I find myself out of my 4 prepared systems (depending on blacks responce to 1.d4) an opponent would have to play something totally unexpected (1.b5 or something) to throw me. As black I sometimes take a bit more time to...

Re: Chess on TV

Peter Williams >I think you should write a book about your life < You may not know that one of my books is 'Poker 24/7 - 35 years a proker pro.' Cathy Rogers thought it should have been chess and poker, but who would have bought that? I don't think an autobiography of my life in chess would sell at...
