Re: OLYMPIAD 2008 :):)

England's strategy against Russia is interesting: provocative Black openings, solid White ones. All designed to encourage the Russians to overreach themselves. It looks to me as though they're playing to win.

I can dream, can't I?

Re: How much more incompetence can we afford from ECF?

Shouldn't this be in the Olympiad thread?

Re: Decline and Fall?

I've no idea why it no longer appears on line. It would seem a not very fruitful means of encouraging purchasers of the print edition, and seems an odd approach if the intention is to attract more advertising. Maybe someone is on holiday? It's been over a month. I'd like that kind of holiday. Does ...

Re: nothing better to do of a Friday evening

According to his card, Fred Hamperl of Guernsey appears to have the FM title despite never having an Elo above 2077. Is this right? How did he manage it? Maybe he scored 66.7% or higher over 9 games in a previous Olympiad. Olimpbase confirms that he did indeed score 6.5/9 (72.2%) on Board 4 in 2006...

Re: Decline and Fall?

The Telegraph seems to have given up posting Malcolm's daily chess columns on line. My local Waterstone's seems to have given up stocking any chess books at all (although poker books seem to have proliferated). Straws in the wind? I emailed the Telegraph about their neglect of Malcolm's column. All...

Re: Sealed move question

The possibility of the player who did not seal not being present at the start of the resumption. However, the player remains in their Hotel room whilst a runner observes the played seal move and communicates it. I think there is a mechanism in place to stop this but have forgotten what it is. :?: A...

Re: Kramnik 10/1 to win game 7 with White (or even with Black!)

Yes, that point was made earlier on the Atticus forum. I gave my response there, the gist of which was that I (for what it's worth) regard the matchplay, mano-a-mano champion as the real deal, not this half-baked FIDE tournament business. I hope Anand retains his FIDE title and wins the classical t...

Re: World Championship

Somehow this doesn't feel like a World Championship to me. Something's missing; something's not quite right. You're right - not a single threat to walk out, no allegations of excessive toilet use, no cables dangling from the ceiling, and not even a hint that either player might fancy a yoghurt afte...

Re: Kramnik 10/1 to win game 7 with White

Bookies, Paddy Power, make Kramnik 10/1 to win tomorrow's game with White. It will be difficult to do that - Kramnik actually has Black in Game 7, since the colour sequence reverses at the halfway mark (Regulation 3.4.1). I think it's to ensure that the players aren't always in the same situation o...

Re: Nominations for October 2008 AGM??

I find this forum invaluable in keeping up to date with chess matters in this country alongside other websites like the SCCU one. The best example is the planned grading change for next season where I am now better equipped to answer queries on this from members of the English Deaf Chess Associatio...

Re: No news is bad news

Is there any chance that this thread will avoid degenerating into a series of personal attacks? There's a pretty big issue at stake, and maybe - just maybe - some calm consideration of the facts would help. Of course, when facts are thin on the ground, speculation tends to run riot. A statement expl...

Re: World Junior Chess Championships 2008

Howell plays for the title tomorrow morning after winning with black today.

Whether or not he wins, he's played superbly throughout.
