Re: British 2016 Round by Round

Is the 4 point upfloat in the Major Open a record? Brandon Clarke has a incredible performance rating of 2548 at the moment, I believe he has been to the USA recently and has really improved his game similar to Brian Tarhon. Wonder if we are not missing a trick here with our juniors if we could dis...

Here's his Chessmetrics page. According to that page, his world ranking peaked at No. 12. Brief biography in Wikipedia, which is backed up by The Oxford Companion to Chess.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade prob...can anyone assist?

This may help with the print spooler problem: http://www.sysprobs.com/print-spooler-stopping-automatically-fix. I think it's pretty much what Angus French suggests, but spelt out in detail. On the general issue of Windows 10, I've upgraded four machines of various vintages without problems. An eight...

Re: Under promotions for pawns during a match game

The closest example in my games was this missed opportunity. I played 41...Rxd2 and won easily enough, but there was a mate in three available. Chess in Facebook Messenger

Via the Guardian : you can play chess against one of your Facebook friends using the Messenger app. Send the message '@fbchess play' and a board appears. You enter moves by typing them. Fortunately there doesn't seem to be an engine attached, so the possibilities for using this to cheat seem limited.

Re: Claiming threefold repetition/disturbing neighbouring boards

No - I'm saying that he may not have been sure at that point (the third occurrence followed a different move sequence), and perhaps a bit surprised. There's no suggestion of unsporting conduct whatsoever. It seems that everything was fine, as I'm sure it is in 90% of such cases, probably more. Howe...

Re: Claiming threefold repetition/disturbing neighbouring boards

My opponent was equally well aware of the laws, and (quite properly) rejected the claim. If you are saying that your opponent knew perfectly well that the position was occurring for the third time but rejected the claim because he could, I regard that as, to say the least, unsportsmanlike. Am I out...

Re: Chessbase 12 question

It sounds like one or more of the ChessBase fonts has gone missing or you've inadvertently changed the fonts used for printing. In the Page Setup dialog (with a game window open, choose File > Print > Page Setup) choose the Fonts tab. The Notation option should have a font name beginning 'FigurineCB...

Re: Claiming threefold repetition/disturbing neighbouring boards

I'll offer the following story to illustrate that the problem can be resolved if there is good will and reasonable behaviour on both sides. The Birmingham League has a time control option with a 10 second increment. I'd reached the wrong end of K+Q vs K+Q+P, with the pawn a long way from queening, s...

Re: On last night's Odd Couple episode...

The Oxford Companion to Chess (1st edn) has this under the entry for 'First move': FIRST MOVE, the single-move that begins the game, made by White in modern chess. At one time players drew for colour and again for the right to move first. In the BOURDONNAIS-McDONNELL matches of 1834 each player had...

Re: Quality of club venues

Leagues could help the situation in a small way by setting recommended standards for venues. New clubs would have to meet them; existing clubs would be encouraged to improve (where necessary). Some basic standards really ought to be met: Playing room not used by general public or venue staff during...
