Re: Agreeing a time control not permitted by the rules?

Hi I've been emailed(?) Why they did not post on here - I don't know. Apparently a dog was not allowed into a club rooms so the owner made the dog a member and paid the sub. Another club member saw the name on the members list and entered the dog into a club tournament. Also (apparently) I have ment...

Re: Agreeing a time control not permitted by the rules?

Great Thread. I love reading/hearing about these wee tit-bits of chess lore. To give another regions view on the main subject. Edinburgh have different time controls for different clubs depending on their venue as some have very strict 'kicking out' times. I've played to some odd times: 1 hour 17 mi...

The Morphy Game: The Duke of Brunswick did not play it!

And that's a fact.

Re: Ken Bloodworth

Brilliant - a perfect game for the Corner.

Pity I just posted one a few minutes ago - next week.

Re: 1 d4 d6 2 Nf3 Bg4

An interesting and valid point.

This thread was started on Mar 21, 2009 .

How old does a thread have to be until it is considered part of Chess History?

Re: Ken Bloodworth

I remember playing Ken 4 years ago at Paignton. I was 12 at the time - he was 92. This ensured that the game got written up in the local paper, so many people could see me walk into an opening trap that i hadn't seen before  Hi Rob, Any chance of getting a copy of the game. I did a little bit...

Re: Happy Birthday, Leonard

Hi Mr Barden, I use the term 'Mr' out of respect, I was always taught to be polite to my elders. (though on The Corner I call you Lenny and Mr.Winter is Teddy- but that is The Corner - utter nonsense - it pays well - but it's nonsense really). If you think it too formal and we converse again then I ...

Re: Happy Birthday, Leonard

Many Happy Returns Mr Barden. I've just finished reading the Wikipdia page dedicated to you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Barden It appears to be one of the most accurate accounts of a chess player that I have seen on 'Wiki'. and is very revealing. British Chess owes you a great deal and wil...

Re: 1 d4 d6 2 Nf3 Bg4

Hi Matt, It's all styles and taste. the Nc4 line I was glad to see as you just knew the guy had prepped up and did not know all the wrinkles. it's always dodgy going into someone's pet line OTB. They will know the the dirty and unclear lines. Their prep will stop and then the more experinced player ...

Re: 1 d4 d6 2 Nf3 Bg4

What's your grade? Can we talk? Are we evenly matched? I've dropped it as well. (unless I met GM's in simuls(!) fluked draws v Aagaard and Shamkovitch with Latvians) 3.Nxe5 is lorded about but Black can wriggle and create. 3.d4! OTB is very difficult for Black. I have a 100% with it as White....

Geoff Chandler wrote "I'm also Guy Willis Chandler (who he?)" Guy W Chandler was the founder and longtime secretary of the British Chess Problem Society. Thank you Mr. Barden. On some database he appears to have some of my games attached to his name which is a great shame as I'm sure they are losse...

Re: 1 d4 d6 2 Nf3 Bg4

Probably don't tell players graded 100 points higher that their pet openings are rubbish. I even took the trouble of checking out the Forum rules. I cannot find the bit that states: "... and a players must never disagree with a player graded 100 points more than them." The lad had the termerity to ...

Re: A thank you to Ray Keene for the Staunton and other events

I think everyone on this forum would be happy to thank Ray Keene for organising tournaments such as the Staunton Memorial, which have provided opportunities for British and British resident players to compete against strong international opposition, including legendary figures such as Korchnoi and ...

Re: Chess is another activity the Taliban considers un-Islamic

My wee mate from Saudi has been back in touch. He's sorry but he he was unaware Saudi did not play in the GCC. "...its not only chess, we seem to neglect individual sports in general and focus on team sports." (GCC is a team chess event......leave it). My 'fee' is to look at one of his games and I w...
