Re: A question about noise during a match

Hi Dave, I did not call you a liar mate, just got the dates mixed up. I'm afraid I see the funny side of everything and the chess forums are full of leg-pulls and wind ups. Not so much on this site I have to admit. Some forget it just a game. A brilliant and beautiful game...but it's just a game. So...

Re: Hastings

Exellent last round game Jack. I see you were posting miserable the other day. You will have to learn how to win ugly when the creative juices don't flow. Ugly = the boring technical way. A great result for Mark H-Bomb. The quick last round win clinching draw was just reward for the effort he put in...

Re: A question about noise during a match

As I said in that other thread about bogus players.

"People believe anything...."

I emailed the Bon Accord Club Sec. before I would make a comment.

It's hopefully some kind of Christmas gag or the lad has seriously
mixed up the place and date.

Re: Hastings

Corner Hasting report. Picked up on the usual blunders.

Scottish players should refrain from playing Chess on New Years Day.

Re: Laos Round-Robins

People believe anything. The Corner has had a few fake tournament/league match reports in the past. The last bogus report was the Paisley Open - won by Huigh Brechin complete with fake games. And even though in the final placings I had; H.Potter, R.Starr and J.Lennon...etc. People believed it. http:...

Re: Help needed please

Sorry for delay in replying, have new job that is killing me. I come home knackered. Quick tea, bath and bed. When I was caretaker the club was open 7 days a week 24 hours a day. These days 7:30 - midnight Mon-Sat closed Sunday. However if you email the club they can perhaps set you up for a Sunday....

Re: Chess Devon editorial on various issues...

Hi This problem of hiring 'outsiders' was quite rife in Edinburgh a number of seasons ago. I recall one enterprising club loaded it's weaker 2nd team with 2000+ players from Glasgow and Falkirk when it had a game v a club that was in contention with it's stronger team for the league. I think it's ki...

Re: 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Nf6 4 Ng5 Bc5 5 b4

Estrin in the Batsford Edition (1983) of the Two Knights mentions it without giving it a name. He claims a plus for White after 5...Bxb4, 5..Nxb4 amd 6...Bb6. but "5....d5! 6,ed Nxb4 and Black avoids all the unpleasantness." In Estrin's CHESS edition (197?) of the same book (the blue book) he makes ...

Re: History of the Grading System

The Club has a full set of bound CHESS and BCM and also 100's and 100's of loose copies of both mags. You are right each one really is fascinating. A peek back into the past. The pictures off the players all seem the same. Everyone has neat haircuts, shirt and tie, baggy grey flannel trousers and an...

History of the Grading System

Hi guys. With all this drama and melody revolving around the grading system I thought this might be of interest. Whilst waiting for the games to finsh at the current Edinburgh FIDE tournament. (ends today - designed to get players IM norms - no luck there but there have been some excellent games esp...

Re: Players agreeing to their own time controls (part II)

Phew!! Because Bob sat down and played 1.e4 with the Letters and Numbers facing him. They were correct for him. His opponent who arrived 10 minutes late want the board turned around so he could have the letters on his first rank and the numbers the correct way up on his left. I know it would mean hi...

Re: Players agreeing to their own time controls (part II)

Hi. It does seem I have not made myself clear. The numbers were on 'only' on the left hand side of the board and the letters were only printed on the bottom of one side of the board. Imagaine a board just designed for study and no opponent. 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 * A B C D E F G H If you sat down as Black ...
