Re: The Last Corner

Hi John. A few people have suggested a 'Best of....' People will click on and watch that stuff for free but making a book out of it is a non-starter. I agree it would compete with most of the total pap that is published but it's not book worthy. I could call it Chandler Cornered Openings. That would...

The Last Corner

Just updated the very last Corner with 3 great games.

(OK two very good games from Andrew Greet who won the Brillo prize
at the recent Edinburgh Congress.)

Re: Best excuses

"Now I can never play you again and beat you." Said by a player called Morphy (sic) who resigned against me when he had a 3 move mate on. I refused the resignation, offered a draw and showed him his win. The result was logged as a draw. He stopped playing about 5/6 years later and he never did beat ...

Gold Dust in the 5 for £1.00 box

A real smashing bargain for 20p.

Yet again the Gothenburg Triangle ( a new game).

An instructive game for Teachers and a Joey Cage problem

Re: The Morphy Game: The Duke of Brunswick did not play it!

Hi Paul.

I've just squeezed in a game I used when I teaching the kids
in the mid 80's. Lord of the Rings was quite big in Edinburgh
at the time so I used Frodo.

Re: Aagaard's "Attacking Manual" (Volume 2)

Hi Street Fighting Chess reviewed by The Corner here; http://www.chessedinburgh.co.uk/chandlerarticle.php?ChandID=279 Some middle of the range Scottish players who you would have classed as timid now have teeth and this book is to blame. It's often quoted in some of the games I get sent. Be prepared...

Re: Rubbish Theoretical Article?

When I played the Sicilian I often faced the Morra. I use to look at the b1 Knight and play 3...d3 http://chessimg.com/26R.png It usually went into some kind of Moroczy Bind which the White player never really knew what he was doing. Had a good score with but in reality I only played it against 'wea...

Re: Rubbish Theoretical Article?

Hi Guys. Back to topic. I think most players go through an obscure unsound openings phase. It can serve as a good background because you have to have faith in your tactical ability to play them because tactics is the only way you can hope to win from some of the postions you accept. In the majority ...

Re: Is this interesting

Wow Charlie. Good Luck with this. If this comes off, and you are 90% there on enthusiasm, then you must write a detailed article for CHESS or BCM telling others how to apporach and any mistakes to watch out for. God knows what would have happened if you had to run it past any chess committee. They w...

Re: Rubbish Theoretical Article?

But a lot of our under 120 brothers play simply for the fun of playing chess and they will be playing against other under 120 players of the same attitude. If one of these lads followed a Kasparov opening they would soon get themselves into a right mess. Let them have their fun. I know Rick very wel...

Re: Rubbish Theoretical Article?

Hi Paul "the worst "theoretical" article seen in a serious publication this century," A wee bit to harsh I'm thinking. I don't think it's that bad. Infact it's quite well researched and club players will throw up the e-pawn right away perhaps expecting a quick victory. Something here for the optimis...

Re: Portrayal of chess players in film and on television

Hi Keith. I've often said if you line up 20 guys and tell me one is a chess player then after 5 minutes I could pick him out. It's the 'haunted look' that would betray them. Years of looking out for traps, tricks and total mistrust at every one of your opponents move leaves it's unique mark. Chess o...

Re: Time scramble + illegal move

By coincidene I witnessed one of these in a 25 minute allegro
on Sunday just gone.

I did not know if I should butt in as I was only scoring the game.
The player made up mind for me by mating theior opponent.

Re: FIDE taking the piss?

Hi Paul. I know it's all pie in the sky and I doubt if chess would ever be part of the main Olympics. I just want some of the money those junkies who run around in circles in their underwear get to come to British Chess. Athletics is really a joke. Look at the publicity that is created over the 100 ...
