Re: when should you resign a game?

Hi Sean, I've seen worse. A lot worse. In the Scottish Championship in the 70's a player did not resign so his opponent thought he would take the mickey and promote ALL his remaining pawns. When he placed his 3rd. Queen on the board it was stalemate. And James Turner resigned in a won position in th...

Re: Chess is another activity the Taliban considers un-Islamic

An interesting article. Thanks. At least it's not the old standard; "Islam Bans Chess" tale which is floated out every now and then. These same stories surface from time to time along with UFO's, pensioners giving birth and pictures of odd shaped vegetables. I suppose a newspaper in an islamic count...

Re: The Secret of Chess

Is that correct?

equus pro cursore.

I cannot make out the pawn. 'The runner is law'

I don't want to put something wrong on the Corner...

....er....OK that will do.

Re: The Secret of Chess

Hi Roger,

What I find incredible is that although 'U' and 'I' are next to each
other on the keyboard thus making a 'typo' a distinct possiblity.

I have never seen:

Passed pawns must be pished.

Re: The Secret of Chess

Now there's an idea.

Do me the LAtin for.

Passed pawns must be pushed.

A knight on the rim looks dim.

Knights before Bishops.

Develop your pieces (I've seen that in a Tartakower book).

And any other chess 'rules of thumb' you can think of.
I'll drive 'em bonkers.

Re: The Secret of Chess

That's the 'Deputy Dawg' song. (yes?)

Oh My Darling etc...

Either that or it's about oranges.

Next Corner I'll drop on a few Latin quotes just for you.
But if my readers complain I'll send them here.

Re: The Secret of Chess

Hi John No1. That will be why my spell checker skims it. I did an article about Sultan Khan ages ago. (perhaps I should maintain the trend and start calling him Sultan Kann) I lean on my spell checker more than a middle class chess player does his BCO. I don't mind at all you bringing in some facts,...

Re: The Secret of Chess

Hi. Glad it has inspired you. Actually that is how I play as White. My pet opening is the delayed Lopez. I wait for the Knight to go onto f6 and then chop c6 and play d3. I then potter about looking for wee traps - Black (after dxc6) can never play d5 so his traditional counter play against my e4 pa...

Re: The Secret of Chess

Hi Alex, We all have that knack. Sometimes there is nothing to do in a position so we panic. The good players 'tack' as Euwe put it. They know there is nothing on so improve a piece or nudge at a potential weakness. They play chess. If I'm in a nothing doing position I think I'm losing so sac someth...

Re: Raymondo

It is now time to bring this particular thread to a close and move onto something new please OK. I've had my fun on this one and anyway it appears the other lads have run out of villians to compare RK with. I love a good tactial stramash in a game of chess and I love (even more thses days) a good r...

Re: Game search

Hi James,

It looks like you tracked down the game.

That game is on the Informator disc - annotated by Maric. So if you can lay your
hands on Vol 18 it's game 201 it might reveal more details.
The Informant usually lists it's sources.

Maric gives 20.Bxh6 a !

Hope this helps.

Re: Raymondo

Hi, Well there is a lot venom getting spat out and nobody seems to be defending the poor guy. He's a chess player. I'll stand by him. Let's look at some incidents. Perhaps RK thought the 25 year old photgraphs were out of focus. Remember he is short sighted. And Ian Rogers is Australian, they speak ...
