They might have to play the games on line (Fischer playing in Cuba in 1965 style).

Re: Knight Pair

Janos Flesch in his 1983 'Planning in Chess' makes a case for the knights in chapter one 'The Role of Knights and Bishops' adding: "The Truth is that chess players of a previous age knew better how to use one and two knights.' By coincidence tonight at the club I found this in an old N.I.C. from a r...

Re: Tata Steel 10th-28th Jan 2020

Hi Danny, I think this unbeaten run by a World Champion is good for chess and hopefully the media the will catch it when he finally drops a game. He has come close to losing a few times but managed to confuse his opponents enough to save the game. But I agree, players should all agree beforehand to ...

Re: Buying and Selling

Hi Paul, Recall reading a while back about rule 11.1 and it's flexibility to match any given situation. (I noted 11 + 11 = 22 and basically Catch 22 means no matter which way you wriggle and squirm the system has you by the short and curlies.) Rule 11.1 covers everything from wearing Bermuda Shorts ...

Re: World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2019

I watched the video again (I'm waiting for the guy in Bermuda Shorts to appear.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPysTEW0YZU They give a clumsy looking Helpmate in 10 under promoting to a Knight (A LSB would also suffice.) I have two variations in 6 moves without a promotion. Anybody do it in less? ...

Re: Does being a team captain affect your grade?

Hi Kevin, My lot you had to keep reminding. They would meet up in Bells and and say they would see me there! I phoned Bells one night to tell the barman to kick them out and get a taxi. After the match the serious drinking would start. I always had a days holiday the next day which is just as well b...

Re: World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2019

I've watched vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPysTEW0YZU The arbiter is real quick in placing the Kings to show a Black win. Both players appear surprised. Grischuk explains to Carlsen how it can be won. Carlsen is telling him it's a draw! The 'Carlsen spoke to me in Norwegian' incident is quit...

Re: Chess & Bridge Withdraw Ray Keene's Book from Sale

Hi Kevin,

Up here at the moment that is the war cry: 'Have a Happy New Year.'

This is for people you might not see again for a week or two.

The hand shaking of complete strangers and kissing of women will start in 24 hours.

Re: Does being a team captain affect your grade?

Yes. I hated being a captain, though I was not too bothered with the grade more in my result for the team. Never really minded losing in an individual event, it goes with the style, but losing a league game made me feel I had let others down. I often captained a team of perpetual late arrivers. You ...

Re: Chess & Bridge Withdraw Ray Keene's Book from Sale

Hi Justin,

Yes. I'm known as Mr Cool in my neck of the woods. I skateboard, wear baggy trousers, my baseball hat back to front and call everyone 'Dude.'

You Dudes all have a Happy New Year.

Re: FIDE Laws - An Interesting Case

Hi Paul, I know you will be reluctant to reveal names but surely we can see the position where the double resignation took place. Chess history furnishes us with players resigning in a won position (it happened to me twice OTB...my opponents resigned when winning) But a mutual resignation is a new o...

Re: Chess & Bridge Withdraw Ray Keene's Book from Sale

Hi Jaques, I would not touch one of his opening books on principle...the principle being I have 100's of bloody opening books 99% of them 2nd hand. But books on players games I 'm up for and that sentence I used. I read it a couple of times to make sure I understood what the lad was striving to say....

Re: Chess & Bridge Withdraw Ray Keene's Book from Sale

Hi Jonathan, Now he really does sound like lad I can relate too. Just seen this posted 'review'. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51WdNpxbHRL._SX346_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg 'I bought his book about Larsen and I was shocked by the florid, diverting writing style.
