Re: Some questions arising from "Birth of the Chess Queen"

Hi Paul, The Columbus tale sounds metaphorical. This 2017 link: 'New World Discovered Because Of - A Chess Game?' https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/new-world-discovered-because-of-a-chess-game Mentions the above story and the poster got it from Edward Lasker's 'Adventure in Chess' published b...

Re: Resigning in a Winning Position

Ahhh...now it makes sense. It must have been this. b4r1k/p4rb1/1p5p/2p1p3/2P4P/PQ1PPpPq/5P2/BR1RN1K1 b - - 0 1 It was not clear something had been taken on g3 from the link. Thanks Mathew and congratulations for winning the Scottish Title. (and for kicking off a heated yet interesting debate in whic...

Re: Resigning in a Winning Position

Have to admit it looks at first glance resigns is a sound choice.

Before Black played 36...Qg3+ (White then resigned) 36...Rg8 just mates easily.

Both players were caught with the same mirage of i't must be mate.'

Re: Game Changer - a review

Hi Carl, if there is no reason other than lack of use for the 'Book Review' bit to be closed. Stuff this there (and close it again!) https://www.redhotpawn.com/imgu/blog/1/b4u437199-1564137957.png I’m not a good chess player, infact on my recent 68th birthday they arranged the candles on my cake in ...

Re: Game Changer - a review

Got it - thought it was a wrong link again. It's called Doomed to Draw. Read a bit of it, hard to see where Game Changers came in, a snapshot of the cover when it starts might have been handy, Never mind too late to get an idea from it. Just another POV. But it does appear he as read a bit of the bo...

Re: Game Changer - a review

Hello again, Was enjoying this review... http://ontheroadtochessmaster.com/review-of-game-changer/ He was as sceptical as me....till I sused he got a freebie when I saw this bit: "Then, like a beam of light shot straight into my soul I come home one day to find the book Game Changer in my mailbox." ...

Re: Game Changer - a review

Hi Justin,

Did not read Jacob's review - don't get NIC (but I will get a read of that one) and the other I could not get on.

Re: Game Changer - a review

Caught it Justin Thanks. But if a reviewer does not like a book then disparaging remarks are part of the review. Just wondered why the book review bit was closed else I would have posted there. I like the book, could have done without the techno bit but can see others enjoying that part. Maybe two b...

Game Changer - a review

Thought I post my take on the book but the 'Book Review' thread is locked. (why?)

Re: Quit Stallin'

Chess Essentials are running a well stocked book stall this weekend at The Scottish Championship in Edinburgh. http://www.scottishchesschamp.co.uk/ Just came back with a few books I have to smuggle past Mrs. C. How do women do it? I have 100's of chess books scattered all over the house yet she can ...

Re: I JUST CANNOT BELIEVE THIS

It happens all the time (maybe the picture was mirror'd) Today one of my 2nd hand bookshop contacts called and reeled off a few chess books. These conversations usually go something like this. 'Got it','Got it','Got it','Got it','Got it','Got it',....say that again...'Got it', 'Got it','Got it','Got...

Re: Best place to find recent books/dvd on Chess Openings

Hi Roger, Now I'm home ground. Opening Traps! You are correct if you are sticking a few i tricks/traps and pitfalls in your back pocket for a rainy day then always poke them about to make sure you can handle any after trap setting wriggling and swindling. The good players of today are much better th...

Re: Media comments on chess

I bought a DVD yesterday (Cube One) as part of a 4 for a £1.00 deal. (it had a guy playing chess on the cover so it was a 'must have'.) One guard was trying to solve a puzzle in a newspaper and we were given a shot of it. https://www.redhotpawn.com/imgu/blog/1/b4u437199-1561634851.png (picture taken...
