Re: Ignorance is Bliss

Just watched it on Catch Up. It was OK just a piece of fun. Any news is good news. The fear of 'draughts' gag because the players were in a glass cube was quite good, very close to the line when explaining Armageddon 'Black wins....so unlike life then. ' If they do get complaints it will be about th...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Hi Roger, Off the top of my head. 2 hours 40 moves. 20 moves an hour thereafter no adjournments. I will allow you to use electronic clocks but no tampering with increments. (I wonder if these clock manufactures have had some say in this and what goes on so we (I have one) have to buy one.....I knew ...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Hi David, I might change my mind yet again. You have to be flexible in these things and appreciate those on the inside, the rule makers would have tossed this thing over and over before reaching a decision....Well I hope so. I (we) cannot argue against that sudden burst of media interest when the ra...

Re: World Chess Chmpionship.

I went down for game 5. https://www.redhotpawn.com/imgu/blog/1/b4u437199-1542557508.png Could not get a ticket at the door, could not blag my in. Went to a net café nearby to watch the game, nobody there knew the event was on. On the way home popped into a 2nd book shop near King's Cross. Bought a c...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Hi Roger, "There won't have been any world championships because no-one was crazy enough to specify rules that have sudden death without increments. " No sure what you are saying. Is it previous World Championship from the time of Steinitz had increments. Hi Matt, You can get great 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 ...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Hi David, Yes I did change my mind on draw odds when I decided to look at a way to sort this out this tie break farce and give it a real good look. I'm flexible that way, ready to admit when I'm perhaps wrong. I do not want rapid/blitz tie before or after the main event. I realised the only real alt...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

HI, "I agree that chess has moved on significantly." And in the wrong direction. "Objectively the players at the top are better than they were 20-30 years ago," I do not think so, they are not being asked to demonstrate a skill that has been removed from the game....read on. First a case for champio...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

I'm beginning to think Carlsen's draw offer was pure Lasker. Carlsen has just played 31...Ra8 and offers a draw. r3brk1/1pq5/3p1bp1/2nP1p1p/pQP1pP1P/4B1P1/PPR1BN2/1K1R4 w - - 0 32 The best White move appears to be 32.Nh2 we then get this forced sequence. (forced as in if Caruana avoids it he gets a ...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

No tie breaks before the match. The winner then has draw odds.

And why waste time money and effort on a side show t before the main event when
you might not even need it. As it is OK just wish Carlsen had played on for a few moves.

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

That was a let down. Carlsen was up on the clock, Fabiano was down to 8 minutes and Black had some good ideas there. He should have taken him to move 40 at the very least. Kasparov maybe right, perhaps Carlsen has lost his bottle. It has ruined a very good chess match. Hope Caissa pays him back on W...

Re: Unrated player awarded CM title in Olympiad with score of 2/4 and 1823 rating performance

Hi Nick, The losing board two player. Bill Hartston, also won a board prize. The losing board three player also won a board prize. Have no time ATM to work out if these gifted ½ points made a difference but there may have been more in the kitty than an IM title. I'd would have fancied my drawing cha...

Re: Unrated player awarded CM title in Olympiad with score of 2/4 and 1823 rating performance

Sounds like it is well within the rules. Certainly more palatable than this Olympiad mid-match discussion: "Our board 2 needs ½ point for an IM norm but is getting beat. However your board 3 is clearly losing. So if you agree a draw on Board 2 so our man can get his IM norm. We will agree a draw on ...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Hi, Think the current format 12 games all over in 3 weeks with exact start and finish date very attractive to potential sponsors and the media. Do not like rapid/Blitz so champion has draw odds. Or Cancel candidates. Make that the World Championship. Qualify as normal except the current Champ does n...
