Re: ECF Council Meeting 12 April 2014

Morning everyone. Thanks Alex for posting that for me. Was getting Internet upgraded and it took longer to be activated. Life without the www! Sorry for the confusion yesterday. It was only when Lara texted me that I realised I had written QC. I have no idea where that came from as he is arbiters. P...

Re: ECF Council Meeting 12 April 2014

So if I understand this right: (a) Sean tells us that the ECF apparently has a communication from FIDE confirming that licensed arbiters are not required to be present at non-norm FIDE rated events. Nick has also confirmed that licensed arbiters are not required to be present. (b) Andy, in the best...

Re: ECF Council Meeting 12 April 2014

Would have preferred Sean and Nicks version to be confirmed to be honest as we want to FIDE rate one of our team knockout tournaments up here. C'est la vie...

Re: ECF Council Meeting 12 April 2014

So is there a definitive/agreed FIDE position or not on whether a licenced arbiter does actually need to be present at a FIDE rated event, or whether it's OK for him/her to be at the end of a telephone? As Nick says, the answer is yes if it is a norm event, but no otherwise. The ECF have an email f...

Re: Anyone got a DGT board for home use?

I have a usb board and connect to playchess.com through the interface or ICC/FICS with a third party program. Works really well to be honest

Re: Anyone got a DGT board for home use?

Yes I have one. No good for anything less than 15 minutes per side. I used to play in an online league where the time control was 60+15s and it was really good for that

Re: April fools day jokes

A few years ago, April 1 was on the Edinburgh Congress weekend and I was doing the live board for it as well as arbiting. For the morning session I slipped in a couple of players that were not there and manually entered the Immortal game. Got quite a few bites with that one!

BDO at their best. According to Lakeside he is 6th, Either that or they have not updated yet (which given they have done the draw...)

Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

The BDO 1st prize in 1993 was £30,000 and rose to £46,000 in 2001. It's £100,000 now. (The prize money for the runner-up has only doubled in that time.) The PDC as it became had a 1st prize of £16,000 in 1993, rose only to £33,000 in 2001. So the PDC wasn't really succeeding until Hearn came a...

Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

And on who to vote for. Well I have spent three months trying to get answers from the Kasparov team on questions for a Council meeting we have coming up. No one wants to communicate. With no evidence, it is going to be hard to convince people to vote for them so we may be voting for Kirsan

Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

Can I just correct a few posters about the Darts PDC thing. The split took place in 1993 when 16 players ( From memory it was Taylor, Priestly, Harrington, Lowe, Warriner, Bristow, Wilson, Anderson, Harvey, Lazerenko, Deller, Gregory and a couple of others who I can't remember, I helped to organize ...

Re: Match abandoned

I can remember playing quite a few matches against Holy Cross up here when there was bagpipe practice in the next room. Oddly did not bother us.

There was one match against Bearsden where there was a Choir practice in the building. That was really good to play chess with. :D

Re: Nigel Short about Andrew Paulson, Agon, Kirsan Ilyumzhin

John, I guess the argument goes something like this. The Presidential race between Kirsan and Kasparov could be close. It is rather unlikely than any countries in Western Europe will vote for Kirsan. Of all the countries in Western Europe perhaps England is most likely to vote for Kirsan (or more l...
