Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

Is there any outlet taking bets on the outcome? Even at 200 to 1 on I'd put all my disposable income and spare change on Ilyumzhinov to win by a landslide.

Re: London Chess Classic 2013

Agree with Andrew the two qualifers will be 2600+ ...but sounds like 4 rounds might not be enough to determine fairly the 2 best players in the open section as there is likely to be more than 2 players on 4/4 say 180+ players entered....we know after 1 round there are 82 players on 1/1 assume after ...

Re: European Team Chs in Warsaw

actually Luke McShane was -26 against some opponent a few years ago (Luke was still 2650+)...the guy missed several mates and lost on time! I think he was about 2300 (from memory)...the occasion obviously got to him big time...wonder if he gave up chess after that? I think it was an invitation event...

Re: IM David Eggleston

cheers Lawrence although I'm pretty sure Chris has several more than the 3 listed.... I thought he told me he had 5 when I spoke to him many years ago... has anyone contacted Chris to check? I could of course be mistaken.

Re: Attention Congress Players

interesting sentiment...no doubt as a chess euthusiast you might think that playing chess for a living is a fantastic career because you are doing something you enjoy! I doubt very much wheter most professional chess players feel that way. Most look like they are suffering at various stages wheter i...

Re: Attention Congress Players

these various comparisons to other sports are a bit off topic...however if we assume Mark Hebden is your typical average UK professional chess player (and he may be among the higher earning ones IMO) my point is that I would guess he is still earning a lot less than your average Joe with an average ...

Re: Attention Congress Players

Interesting comment John we can probably look at the UK model as an example among the top chess pros... probably Adams and Short are doing well... then there is a big drop in ratings to the likes of Hebden, Cherniev, Arkell etc.. What would the average salary in the UK be? maybe £28k? certainly Ada...

Re: Attention Congress Players

Option 1 - no prize money - definately a good idea but trophies as there should be some form of recognition I would like to see the results for the two options... I would guess 3 to 1 in favour of cheaper entry fees and no prize money. Chess is 99% an amateur game and I would guess that even the few...

Re: London Chess Classic 2013

hope the organisers can sort out the IT / live coverage this year. Nearly 3 months notice to try to get it right. Last years coverage was one of the worst ever for any event of any chess tournament on the world circuit. Live transmission either kept freezing or it was impossible to link into. The pl...

Re: Chess row in Cork

It will be interesting to see what the sentences are. The chairperson, it seems, is not overly fond of Gabriel Mirza. One could speculate why - belonging to the wrong club, perhaps in more than 1 sense. :) The cheater is a junior, and a member of Gonzaga College, two factors that may shield him wel...

Re: Stopping Cheating

a recent ongoing case in Ireland is not doing the cause of stopping cheating much good when a sub-committee wishes to let a cheater off scot free after having been caught red handed in a toilet cubicle with a computer tablet. http://www.irishchesscogitations.com/blog/ what kind of message does this ...

Re: My Story

Just read your headline post Sabrina.... Sorry to hear you are being victimised by some of your peers and sad chess players. I can only speculate it must be because of jealously as you are young and beautiful and they are older and uglier. Hope that you continue with the Richmond rapidplay and your ...
