Re: A Third Rating....

Alex, I have seen Go players use digital clocks for Canadian overtime, look around, you'd be surprised just what settings are available. Canadian is normally done in practice with analogue clocks (see below). You could do it in chess too with analogue. All you would need is a trustworthy scoresheet ...

Re: Adjournments and Adjudication

Bring back adjournments...and get rid of those pesky clocks. Why should chess move with the times? Reading this thread brought a memory back to the front of mind. This is jumping off into a different game, but it is probably the most extreme example of adjournment abuse in the world, ever. S...

Why would you imagine that one would choose a signature so as to aid communication on each thread that you contributed to? That does seems rather implausible to me.

Re: Adjournments and Adjudication

Let me quote from Richard Eales: That left the most vexing question of all, the regulation of time. How long should a player be allowed to think over his moves? In the early nineteenth century the great majority of games between leading players were offhand games, nearly all of which mush have been...

Re: Adjournments and Adjudication

Strange, Ian, but why would you doubt the eyewitness account? Not strange at all given the spite that flowed from his pen. One simply has to raise an eyebrow at similar accounts of Elijah taking on average 2.5 hours to make each move in a tournament. " We may here remark that Mr Williams is now pla...

Re: Adjournments and Adjudication

The most boring games of all time? We turn to the London tournament of 1851, and the interminable encounters betwen Elijah (the Bristol Sloth) Williams and the deservedly unknown James Mucklow ('a player from the country' says the tournament book sniffily). Elijah introduced the concept of Sitzkrie...

Re: Rules about drinking alcohol before or during matches

There’s a quite strong player on the Yorkshire congress circuit (I won’t name names!) whose hands noticeably shake during the morning game when the bar is closed - he’s always got a pint with him at the board in the afternoon (and I’m guessing he’s had a few during the lunch break) and th...

Of the all the possible top ten chess lists you could desire, why ever do people keep on picking this stale one?

Morphy
Capablanca
Alekhine
Reshevsky
Botvinnik
Petrosian
Fischer
Karpov

Re: Mobile Phone problems at local league level.

So by your logic someone should be defaulted for wiggling their legs, making whistling noises, shuffling feet, drinking from a bottle of water, or anything else that 'causes vibrations to reach an opponents ears. Oh no that’s just a mischievous pseudo attributation. Leg wiggling etc could only le...

I had somebody throw the table at me once, but that was quite some time ago.
Usually it's the ridiculous things people say that are more hurtful.

Re: Arbiter Interference

I think in general that I am very well up on the rules, but I don't understand this one. Lets say we are playing 40 moves in two hours and one hour to the finish. We notice that both flags are down and it transpires that we have played just 35 moves. I assumed this was a draw. What now seems to be ...

Re: Incorrect Clocks

I once played a league game where the following happened. The clocks were set correctly, but upon reaching the time control I did not reset my opponent's clock. It was so long ago now that I cannot remember the reason why. He did not reset my clock. I believe we should have gained something like an ...

Sobkowski Fund

Hello,
I have been trying to find out some information on the Trudi Sobkowski fund for chess education. Although I can find information on the Sobkowski's, my failure to obtain any information on the fund has been complete. Can anyone provide anything about it?

Thank you
