Re: Chess row in Cork

It will be interesting to see what the sentences are. The chairperson, it seems, is not overly fond of Gabriel Mirza. One could speculate why - belonging to the wrong club, perhaps in more than 1 sense. :) The cheater is a junior, and a member of Gonzaga College, two factors that may shield him well...

Re: Is this fair?

The problem is one of vocabulary. The meaning of grading prize has been changed, rather than being replaced with a new term.
Obviously, for the unaware, this will create confusion.

Re: Chess row in Cork

Of course, this isn't the first case of assault involving a minor at a tournament held in Cork. :)

I wonder if they should have published the results table in a circumstance like this...

Re: Magnus Carlsen piece in the Guardian

I don't think that is a particularly compelling argument on your part. If we want to look at misleading historical claims, we might be struck by the earlier statement... "Finally, in considerably longer than it took Stalin's officers to extract bogus confessions, the tank corps is deployed (to C3), ...

Jonathan Bryant wrote: For anybody interest in the standard of reporting in that article, it claims Nigel Short came "very close to becoming World Champion twenty years ago."
I think this is a strange point to quibble over, but I suppose that it depends on how you measure the distances.

What a jolly good idea! Then again, is the Nimzowitsch defense really sound?

Re: An Open Letter To Steve Giddins

I find the slight on Mr Makepeace's reputation to be uninteresting. What puzzles me, is why this man has so many sources. In particular, I am interested to the identity of the 'ECF insider'. Why did he/she/they, when so many other 'outlets' were available, chose this very unbecoming one? Mud sticks,...

Re: School computers

It's frightening that if approved as members of FIDE, Gambia would have the same weight in election of FIDE officials and GA decisions as Russia, Germany, France or the USA. I find that statement quite ugly. If you said that you were worried about the ECF being so happily party to a world governing...

Re: ECF Code of Conduct

I suppose that it ought to be the case that ECF officials are able to be polite on the forum. This may result in them making fewer posts than they normally would.

Re: ECF Code of Conduct

The problem is that if you moderate before people post, the moderator(s) get(s) bored. If people would just censor or ignore the idiots/people who annoy them, then we wouldn't have problems. Sadly though, people don't like doing that. They like to tell people exactly what they think of them, to prov...
