Re: Fischer notes

Even though I've never having studied handwriting in my life, I'd say that if they're not by Fischer's hand, someone's done a very good job of copying it. Having said that, I was also surprised by the algebraic notation. And everyone makes spelling mistakes every now and then. James: They were publi...

Re: Adjournment Tales...

I rather think the Arabs used the algebraic notation in the 11th century. Descriptive was only ever popular in the English and Spanish speaking worlds. Which has always made me wonder why they persisted (if that's that the word I'm looking for as Bertie Wooster was wont to say) for so long. The des...

Re: Adjournment Tales...

Ola. No, Tony was totally alone in the playing area. David Anderton, our captain, said he tried to ensure that Lajos did not see Tony's sealed move. But the Hungarian was adamant. I thought the English team behaved badly. They could have contacted the organisers who could then have contacted the Hu...

Re: Adjournment Tales...

Here are a 3 nice little anecdote. Ton y Miles aainst Portisch sealed resigns in the 1980 Olympiad. He told me many years later his reason for doing so was because there was no arbiter around to accept his resignation. In Torquay in 1982 a Barbadan U16 sealed resigns. When asked why, he said, 'I wa...

Re: London Chess Classic - games only

An alternate presentation of the live games is here, if it works that is: http://rs8.blueapricot.com/pgn4web/live-mosaic-viewer.html Any thoughts on this style of presentation compared to the "normal" flash based live games broadcast? Great that you can see all four games simultaneously. It's rathe...

Re: London Chess Classic - games only

And McShane is currently being billed as "the world's strongest amateur". I'm wondering how much of an advantage it is to be able to prepare for your opponent using games from tournaments they have played in recently, and for them to not have many recent games that you've played to prepare with? on...

Re: Trent and Gordon Commentary at the Classic

David also mentioned yesterday that after university he's going to focus on chess. Hopefully, that means he'll start working with a coach (who might be able to help him with the clock handling issue).

Just can't get my head around that kind of behaviour - is winning so important to them?

Krishna: So, you were at Olympia yesterday? Great to hear about the England win against India, but where is this posted? I don't see any info on the Classic website, and can't find Sabrina's post.

Re: London Chess Classic - games only

Why has David stopped so early for a think? I don't know if you're following the video post mortem, Krishna, but both Hikaru and David pointed out that they were pretty much thrown onto their own devices after 11...d5, and David said he couldn't really remember the theoretical recommendations and t...

Re: London Chess Classic - games only

Why has David stopped so early for a think? Don't know, but the English is one of those openings where you are thrown out of your comfort zone the quickest, in my experience. Despite it not being as popular as many other openings, already as early as the early 1980s, the US IM John Watson published...

Re: FIDE Law Suit

As regards the change to 90min +30sec (and shorter envisaged for the future), I seem to remember that was part of Kirsan's explicit plan to get more chess on television globally (1 hour programs was his idea). This was at a time (early 00s) when the internet really started to come of age in many par...
