Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

Yes, that is what I think would in the short-to-long run be a good thing for bringing more voices to Council. In general, people fall into three categories: 1. People who prioritise ECF Council meetings and will go to them come hell or high water 2. People who will go to ECF Council meetings if the...

Re: Membership fees resolution (from NCCU)

Whatever the outcome of the NCCU proposals it does boil down to the same old thing. Yes ECF members should be getting more for their money and the ECF should do more to increase the player base. But where is the strategy and the team of volunteers who are going to deliver it? You could argue about ...

Re: One Hundred years celebration

The last time Manchester applied to join the NCCU the vote was lost 3-4 with four abstentions (two of the votes for were the Yorkshire delegates). So in theory if one other Northern county can be swung around to the Manchester cause the application would be accepted. Thank you for the information. ...

Re: One Hundred years celebration

Andrew You just referenced the county chess situation in the Chilterns. You seem to have made the error also made by others that because the relevant counties do not compete in Union events there is no county chess. The four counties concerned compete within their own competition - within which the...

Re: One Hundred years celebration

maybe the ECF need to look at this again? John, please. There was an enormous amount of discussion and argument about this in 2017 -2018, on this Forum and elsewhere. In the end even the ECF Board concluded in June 2018 that: "Following Council’s rejection of all the significant proposals to revamp...

Re: One Hundred years celebration

I do feel that now with the 4ncl coming into the fold, people rather play that instead of county chess and while it is popular down in the SCCU and other areas, I do feel that the County format does need shaking up, but people are not big fans of changes Look at the WDF and BDO BDO was popular, and ...

Social Chess?

Just wonder what does people view on social chess?

The reason is in Manchester, we have set up a Social Chess Club for all type of players (male, female transgender etc)

and we get people in, but just wonder if any other people do this and also how do they get these chess set etc?

Re: April Council meeting 2019

We propose that the contribution to International Chess from the ECF’s own funds is capped at£30,000 per annum for 2019/20 through to 2021/2022 (for three years) after which it should be subject to review. It is grossly improper to tie the hands of the ECF AFTER 2019-2020. This part of that proposa...

Re: April Council meeting 2019

Not that I have a direct vote but I'm worryingly in two minds about the proposal. While I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Silver representatives who are a party to this proposal; I do also see the hand of those who are pursuing their own agenda against the board. Me and Michael are very...

Re: 5 Minutes on the Clock

2. When I had less than 5 minutes left I paused the clock and I asked someone to write down my Chess moves, when we finished he said this is not a rule in the league Or in any league for that matter. If there's a watching arbiter it's possible that they may keep score but you don't have any rights ...

Re: 5 Minutes on the Clock

What you say is quite correct. However, in league matches with no arbiter present, I think that you can reasonably ask someone to keep score so that you have a record after the game. The person doing this should ensure that their scoresheet cannot be seen by either player. While I agree with all th...
