Re: 2016 draw

In the under 100 Essex beat Notts 7-5 at Milton Keynes today. An enjoyable match to watch. Until earlier in the week we had been expecting to host the Staffs-Middx Open match as well, but we know what happened there. On the positive side Graham Borrowdale and I got away in time for the 5pm Euro 16 k...

Re: Premier League Fantasy Football 2015-16

Fantasy Cup Round Three Eventually 14 Premier Chess teams entered the draw for the third round. To put it bluntly it was a bloodbath - lots of teams went down by the odd point or two and at the end of the day just three remain. They are - in no particular order - Peregrine Wellies (Barry Redburn), ...

Re: good explanation of board count online

Another system is bottom board elimination. Say a match is tied 3-3. Then eliminate the lowest board where there was a positive result. The result then decides who won. Of course this favours the team that does better on the higher boards, as does board count. Board count favours the team taking wh...

Two bottom seeds paired together... on 3/3! :)

(bottom seed won)
And in the Open the players who finished in 24th & 27th places played each other twice.

Re: Media comments on chess

It seems that James Bond is a chess player. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-34600980 Not a very good one though as he has just been mated, although his opponent also appears to be in check (if the W king is on b1). So presumably the last move was the illegal Qe4 x b7 mate. And why are a...

The thread started off as light-hearted,
but the fun has long since departed.
If layman’s your speak,
you’re exposed as word-weak.
And the wordsmiths will leave you outsmarted.

Re: Semi finals

I don't know whether it matters much but Herts in the Minor Counties qualifed via the EACU - though perhaps their other teams continued to play in SCCU, I don't know. They played in the EACU but were nominated through the SCCU; a quirk of being a member of two Unions. With fines for unfilled places...

Re: Quarter-Finals

Interesting to see though, that this issue was considered when putting together the rules for the National Club: 3. For the purposes of calculating the average grade of the team in sections restricted by grade, the grade of the defaulting player will be used where the default has been named. Where t...

Re: Quarter-Finals

A question thrown up by that quarter-final match: if a team in the Minor Counties has a pre-arranged default, as Cambridgeshire did, what does the defaulted board count as for determining their average rating? Possibly zero, in which case the total of the other 15 players’ grades are divided by 16 ...

Re: Another League Adopts Quickplay Finishes.

I tend to agree with the comments about adjudications but I’ve always enjoyed playing on adjourned games. In my experience they help to improve endgame play as you can look for subtleties in the position that can easily be missed in a frenetic time scramble. Of course computers are used in the pre-r...

Re: Union Reps Skype Meeting 17/July

Roger, that does not answer the question. If you live in the county you are asked to play for, it isn't an issue. It's when you don't live there it becomes a problem. I would sweep away all or most of the eligibility rules. It's long seemed to me wrong that counties are not competing on on equal fo...

Re: Chess Limericks

Of these limericks I'm not a fan, Because very few of them scan. For goodness' sake mount A syllable count, Or chuck the whole thing down the pan. Of course Paul is correct, but: For those with a mind regimental The syllable count is essential For chess humour to fly The rules needn’t apply As they...
