Re: Paris Final: Disappointing Finish

Sorry Kevin you are of course correct. The point I was struggling to make is that when one team agrees to lose and by consequence the other win its seen as outrageous but when both players agree to draw its seen as routine and ok and I can't go along with that as someone may suffer as a consequence...

Re: Paris Final: Disappointing Finish

In football, when Austria contrived a 0-0 draw with Germany so that they could both go through in a World Cup Group game many years ago now there was absolute outrage and the rules were changed. Actually that game (in 1982) was a 1-0 win for West Germany. The teams knew that a one or two goal winni...

Re: Tromso World Cup 2013

Nigel's comments about arbiters were interesting too - thinks officially only 25% of them are any good and privately that it is much less than that, although he exempted the WC arbiters from criticism Being a ‘WC’ arbiter has to be the toughest job in the world…… presumably checking the toi...

Re: Yorkshire Chess - British Championships Competition!

I note that a number of participants in this competition are also playing in the tournament. I hope this doesn’t lead to allegations of match fixing in order to win the bigger prize :D I’m pleased to report that I predicted the draw on Board 1 yesterday……… but was less successful elsewhere...

Re: The Ashes 2013

Another interesting statistic to emerge after the Nottingham test - this was the 17th smallest margin of victory (by runs) in test history. Of those 17 matches, Australia has lost 11 of them. They’ve also lost 5/12 matches to be won by one wicket (with just one win by that score). So there’s no ...

Re: 2013 Final Stage

The rule changes, circulated by Alex H. to captains by email in April made it clear that players had to be ECF members at the time of the match (he’d even underlined that bit). So, as harsh as it seems (and my personal opinion is that the punishment is too heavy-handed) penalties were applied in a...

Absolutely.

And Jonathan, there’s no rush for your renewal. Any time after the final will be fine :)

Re: 2013 Final Stage

I now see that two of the Minor Counties Quarter Finals have had their results adjusted by having similar penalties (to that given to Kent) applied. This current spate appears to be due to non-renewal of expiring 3-year memberships which terminate mid-season. I’m not sure if this was the intention...

Re: 2013 Final Stage

The other thing I like about the SCCU site, other than Richard usually being right, is to know where the matches were played I’d agree with that and maybe an option to enter the venue details can be added to the official results page. I’m sure it would useful for match captains to have list of ...

Re: County Chess

It sounds as though Essex were well enough organised to deal with the problem in hand – a travelling reserve and a non-playing driver who, presumably, would also have stepped in if necessary. Luxury!
