Re: 2013 Final Stage

We have a controller who circulated the new rules to the captains, understands the rules and implements the rules. I’d say that makes a good controller. To be honest, I’m not sure what else he is supposed to do. Reading through the full set of rules is not a particularly exciting thing to do, bu...

Re: 2013 Final Stage

Somebody stupid couldn't work out how to add players not already assigned to a particular team. :? I've emailed Alex and no doubt he will tell me where I went wrong. It appears there was a short-term problem adding new names for about an hour last night. This seemed to resolve to itself. You may ha...

Re: 2013 Final Stage

Some of the quarter-finals were played today. Nice to see the results service working so well: http://www.englishchess.org.uk/county-champs-final-stage-results-20122013/ Are some of the fixtures being played tomorrow, or are some of them just not submitted yet? I see there are 3 missing Bedfordshir...

Re: The number 20.......

I’d guess it was your W-We score at the British Blitz Championship.

Impressive, but not quite good enough to win the grading prize.

Re: Scoring The Time

Which makes me think, there must be many, many, fine games never seen by anybody apart from the 2 players. I’ve often thought that too. Most players keep a record of their gamescores going back years, even decades, but mostly they’re never seen by anybody else. It doesn’t help that players te...

Re: Sad news from Australia...

That really is terrible news. I was lucky enough to visit Melbourne Chess Club in November. A vibrant club, with its own premises which is open every day of the year. I was given a warm welcome and took part in their weekly ‘Allegro’ tournament where I played two of the injured guys. They think ...

EACU places in the Open, Minor Counties and u180 will all be decided today when the four first teams meet at Newmarket for the final two rounds of matches.

"What does 'urban' mean to the young 'uns?" I believe, My Lord, that it is a reference to modern youth musical culture, with particular leanings towards "Hip Hop", but as I am not exactly "down with the kids", I may be talking complete rubbish. The comment below (12:23) seems to summarise it eloque...

Re: Rare first edtion chess books

Re: Hastings

Being a club mate (and captain) of Ali can be quite frustrating sometimes Some players in the past have used it as a tactic, but I have seen it back-fire (even with Ali), so unless people want the zero default time you have to expect some players to continuing using it as a tactic Well it didn't ba...

Re: Test Cricket Elo rankings

When I talked about information in scorecards, I wasn't so interested in the three centurians issue. I agree the result is more important. I was thinking about "near defeat draws", but more importantly wins by big margins suggest something different to a few runs or 1 wicket margins. My favourite s...

Re: MY "LIKELY LADS" MOMENT

Didn’t Terry catch a glimpse of a newspaper headline in that episode? – “England F”. Bob was not happy at receiving any information at all (I think they had a bet on that they could avoid the score all day). They went through various pessimistic options – “England fail”, “England flo...

Re: International T20 Cricket Rankings

If the right teams qualify, England, WIndies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand will be in one group, even if they all finish first or all finish second in the initial groups. This seems odd. It does a bit, but I would presume it’s for TV scheduling and to ensure travelling supporters have tickets for th...
